Noob questions: Recomended Guy Line lengths, etc...

    Hello All,

Just received my new Hammock Gear standard cuben fiber tarp.😁

First question: Looking for guy line length recommendations?

Second: Has anyone had any issues with leaving hardware on tarp when storing?I am using Dutch Fly, Dutch hook, along with two 1lbs S biners.

I have many other questions, but will try and work it out myself. Just looking for any pearls of wisdom. I bought reflective cord, and want to avoid cutting it too short.

No problems with storing Dutch hardware with tarp. However, I'm curious why you have S-biners. What purpose do they serve?

I use 8 ft. guy lines larksheaded onto the tarp. I use a marlin spike hitch on the stake.

I have a WB Superfly and I use a 24ft continuous ridgeline using zing-it with a dutch hook on one end, wasp on the other, and TATO Tarp Connectors. For the ground corners I use 6ft red lawson glowire with tarp tensioners and 4ft lines on the doors. I also made a couple of zing-it dogbone extensions for some additional flexibility. The hardware is attached to the CRL which I roll up and put in the end of the tarp stuff sack. Titanium stakes are kept in a separate stake bag. No issues so far.

Here is a good basic tarp setup video that Brandon (Warbonnet Outdoors) put together for his Superfly tarp. He shows a couple of different methods, knots and hardware to use with the Superfly and also mentions some recommended lengths for guyline tie-outs:

12 foot from each end to the trees and 8 feet on the corners. You may want more for the trees if you camp in areas with large diametre trees. 8 feet is a good length to allow for porch mode.

I use the continuous ridgeline from Dutch, and I am using the S biners to attach the tarp to prusik knots. This allows me to un-hook tarp quickly if I ever need to. I also added a prusik knot for the hook end to allow for a better V. I will extend the ridge line with a double fisherman's knot to allow for a better V on the Flyz side too.

About 12' each end for RL's, about 4' backside guylines, and about 8' front guylines for porch mode.

If I was concerned with hardware damage, I'd get rid of the s biners. Doubtful you'll unhook the tarp, much less need to quickly.

I wouldn't bother extending the RL either. I've found the V more trouble than it's worth, just pull the RL a bit to one side on the tree and the straps a bit on the other. Get both a couple inches off the centerline and you'll have plenty of clearance, but that's just how I do it....

    Thanks everyone!
    ,
Any recommendations regarding stakes. Any experience using the MSR ground hogs? Just curious if they wear guy lines?

    Door lengths 8' also?

Also got rid of S biners . Dutch's prusik knots are really cool. Just realized they are a biner already.

That's a novel concept. Why would you ever need to unhook the tarp quickly from the ridgeline?

I use a Dutch continuous ridgeline with Flyz on one end, and a Dutch hook on the other. The tarp is attached via soft-shackle prusiks. I would imagine I could take my tarp down quicker than someone with S-biners every time. All I have to do is unhook my Flyz, walk to the other side and unhook the Dutch hook. Done.
