Whoa! Bad news. Beef up bars like Zilla suggests. Could be you got hit with dynamic forces if you were bopping around at all. Good news though, if you'd been in a rip stop hammock you might have a hole, that canvas just shrugs it off. Might be you had the hang angle shallower than the system supports. That trig will bite you in the butt amplifying force.

I don't know what goes wrong. Have no experience with spreader bars because I don't want to carry them. What I have learnt from friends (watch this video at 4:50 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UupIH7RNgck) is, that spreader bars hardly withstand the compression forces in an occupied hammock. Therefore, they should never ever been used as a hand grip for changing the lying position.
A lot of good help here, bigsig, and you helped yourself by having the inflatable mattress under the hammock. That was a smart move.
