Your biggest obstacle may lie in getting a response from Brian. I ordered a tarp probably over month ago. After not getting any confirmation from him, I sent an email. I still havn't heard anything. I understand this tarp thing is just part time for him, but I'm left wondering If need to get a tarp from somebody else. Does he usually just do business with folks he knows from the forums?

Sadly, that seems to be a typical tale here on this forum. While Brian makes a really nice product, he only seems to respond to inquiries and orders when he's getting ready to make a batch of tarps. You'll hear from him, but only when he has spare time at school.

No, he seems to deal with anyone who orders...but everyone gets delayed equally.

I understand his situation and think he's placing emphasis on what's really right for him...but I also wish, for the sake of hammock-camping enthusiasts, that he would partner with an established vendor who could be more customer-oriented.

I agree. Before anybody goes and does this, somebody, preferrably a lawyer, should figure out whether this is legal or not. It sounds illegal to me, but I'm just a prosecutor in Pennsylvania, and I admit I haven't researched it.

as far as i know its leagal, i mean technically, the out of new york stater bought it, and sold it asap to a new york stater. granted, it is cheep, but its not like brian COULD sell it to you. he says it is not possible, and offers to ship it to someone out of state for you.

its not like you do it to avoid takes, you do it because its the only possible way.

Several years ago a high profile jeweler in NYC tried the same scam - he shipped his product to a NJ address where a person then delivered it to a NY resident. He got convicted of sales tax fraud and got jail time.

I pay for my mortgage and my kids' college education representing people who have "issues" with the IRS and NYS tax department. I have never had a client who got incarceration tell me that his or her jail time was worth the money they saved.

Moreover, NYS has a"use tax" - if you purchase a product out of state, you have to pay the "use tax" when you bring it into the state. It is the substitute for the sales tax.

The answer to high taxes is VOTE! The answer is not finding ways to cheat.

Actually if it was ALL going to healthcare I wouldn't be as upset... Mostly it goes to other things though...

If I want decent health care in a reasonable timeframe I have to pay for it or have insurance, just like south of the border...

Its the cost of excessive socialism and the misapprehension that if the government supplies it it doesn't cost anything... Combine that mentality with two other factors... 1) 1/3 of the Canadian workforce is employed directly by the government, and 2) an additional 1/3 of the Canadian population is supported to some extent by the government via social programs, welfare, housing, etc...

That means the remaining 1/3 has to fork over lots of bucks to keep the other 2/3 in the style they've become accustomed to. AND that since they're the majority its unlikely that it will ever change via voting.

The secret is not to tell any one you are doing it. Also technically everyone whom has purchased a tarp is supposed to pay the applicable tax in there state. that's why if you buy a vehicle in one state and live in another you only pay tax in your home state. "technically"! Personally, I love shopping in New Hampshire No taxes on anything. Curious how much income is not reported by people who sell things on ebay? How many people don't pay taxes on the stuff they purchase of the internet if it wasn't charged to them at time of purchase...SSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....don't tell the Government......ebay tax! or maybe like the phone company surcharges!

The secret is to get back on topic...

Seriously, guys - if you want to talk politics take it to PMs. Or Whiteblaze (that part's a joke).
