How to tighten a marlin spike hitch

How to tighten a marlin spike hitch- Re thinking

    Hi

I used to insert the toggle , pull the tree hugger tight, and ONLY then, put the woopie over
    the knot.

    Last year, i started to:
insert the toggle, and then, instead of pulling the tree hugger tight, i leave it LOOSE.
i put the woopie over the knot, and because the knot is loose, it will slide in.

Then i adjust the woopie, which is easy because it slide freely through the un tighten knot,
and then, if i want, i may pull the tree hugger tight. sometimes i don't bother.

    This gives me an advantage:
the woopie will not accidentally slide out of the knot, because it is well stuck inside it.
(i can still adjust the woopie, after the knot is tight)

I do have a Grizz style whipping knot slider, but still, it works even better, by leaving the knot loose.
It also comes off easier, when i take the hammock down.

i was worried that the knot will be less firm and stable, but i have been doing this for quite a while now, and so far it is working great.

    ...my body is lightweight, though.

please share thoughts and experiences, on the subject

    Thanks

I'm going to add those GWKS (Grizz Whipping Knot Sliders) to my whoopies and try your loose MSH method. I always worry about the whoopie popping off the MSH even though it hasn't happened to me yet. This looks like an elegant solution to address that concern. Thanks for sharing!

The whipping knot makes a great cord lock replacement. I use it on all my stuff sacks. Also have one on my CL that keeps the knot on the end of my ucr or whoopies so that i can detach my suspension from the hammock.

One thing you can do is after you are satisfied with adjustment--height of hammock, centered under tarp, and comfort while stretched out in hammock.
Take whoopie sling off of marlin spike hitch--form a larks head on end of whoopie , insert strap in larks head, slide larks head up past marlin spike hitch and toggle, tighten larks head, slide larks head down to marlin spike hitch and toggle and--Dare it to fall off!!! YMMV I've not tried this--I just dreamed it up in the hanging sleep lab! Good luck.

The mind-picture I get from this description makes it seem closer to putting the loop on the toggle than putting the loop on the knot, but not entirely. So this would not be recommended for folks that grab trail sticks for toggles, but there are toggles where putting the loop on the toggle would be just find (e.g. climbing rated carabiners). So the qualified answer is that subject to the strength of the toggle, this could work.

I like the idea of burying the whoopie under the MSH knot before tightening the MSH. I don't use whoopies any longer.. rather, I use a single length of either amsteel or dynaglide with a fixed loop that goes over the MSH. Same concept as far as the MSH is concerned. I'll try it next hang.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I've used the OP's method several times now, placing the WS on a loose MSH and letting my weight tighten the knot. I do actually snug the MSH down but not tighten it before applying the WS and weight. It works much better than trying to get the WS to stay on an already tightened MSH.

It prevents the WS from resting on the toggle. I always use locally available sticks, no pre-fabbed toggles, so I have to be careful not to let my WS rest on my toggle because they are never stout items.

I haven't used the whipping knot slider method yet, simply because after trying the "loose knot" method it hasn't seemed necessary.

    Thanks for the tip hove64!
