Make sure to let them know that you are taking your business elsewhere. Getting hit in the pocketbook sometimes gets folks into action.
That is a very empty-headed rule more than likely en-acted by someone behind the lines.

I told them on the Facebook thread that this legislation will keep me out of DEC parks. It's sad, because they are beautiful....... but I won't travel from Ohio to sleep on the ground. I'm hoping activity on the thread may garner some interest in revisiting the rule.

Give the NYS DEC State Forests a try. They're much more lax when it comes to backcountry camping rules.

Oh the whole, DEC does a REALLY great job with the parks system. I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

Overall, I had a great experience at Forked Lake (other than it being 90 degrees with swarming black flies.) I definitely have and will continue to use the DEC Forest land, but the Parks are nice too, for when the lady friend and I want to have a nice base camp, and access to showers or other facilities.

as suggested earlier - I am dying to hear whether the tarp counts as a 'tent' in this situation.

I shared my own perspective on their page. I have Sleep Apnea. Sleeping on the ground is torture. I don't do it. It's a bed or a hammock for me. I suppose I could sue them over equal access to someone with a disability

That was my first thought, actually. I'm sure a few people ruined it for everyone at one point in the past. That's too bad. A tarp with doors is nearly identical to a basic A-frame tent.

So you can get naked and change clothes for your nap in broad daylight, but not at night to sleep in the dark?
    It's overfill, not overstuff

Pitch a compliant screenhouse on the pad and your hammock/tarp next to it and ask them where they'd prefer that you change.

I can actually see their point and imagine the scenario that brought it up, but kneejerk regulation is always unfortunate.
