Well, I called my brother earlier and tried pitching the angle of "you'll have better visibility in a hammock, so when you hear something, you can have a look around to see just what it is", but he's still skeptical. I may have to give him a live demonstration. Meanwhile, he's trying to talk me into the whole bivy thing. No thanks on that. I'd rather rest well in a hammock than be restless in a body bag.

Perfectly stated. If you are anxious about the night hike further. Eventually you'll be too tired to care.

Why not put him in a hammock with built in bug net? Feels like a tent but in the air... For some reason I personally feel more secure in one with the bug net too. But love both just the same.

Currently he has a Byer Of Maine Moskito Kakoon. Though it's only a 9 ft hammock, and he's 6 ft. 4, he claims it's comfortable enough for him. As for insulation, he's got plenty of stuff to work with there (an assortment of pads and mummy bags). I think the only thing he still needs to get a hold of is a tarp, but he said at one point that if he was going to attempt sleeping in the hammock, he'd probably just pitch a blue canvas tarp over it for starters. Only thing left to acquire is confidence that he won't become something's midnight snack.

If you can't hear them they don't exist and therefore won't eat you...until they do...at that point it doesn't matter anyway.

I went thru the same process of "bear burrito" thots until I realized that being suspended means I am really more at an advantage as you are almost standing up rather than ready to be pinned on the ground. And I always have a knife around just in case it's necessary to cut a way out or stick something. But if brother does not want to hammock, they do make lightweight tents that suffice for people who love the cold, hard, wet, bug invested ground and it that's his comfort zone, why not?

I won't push the issue too much with him. Maybe try to influence by example, but ultimately it's up to him to get off the ground. As his brother, I'd just like to help him do something that he says he wants to do but is uncertain about doing it. I guess it really boils down to the "hang your own hang" kinda thing. or rather "pitch your own tent". Something like that.

I have to admit when I have the bear spray with me, I make sure to put in in my blackbird's shelf before bed. I really hope I never have the need to try to use it. Spraying through the netting probably is going to be counter productive.

But I think perceived safety is relative. I was watching one of those extreme fishing shows and the guy was in the Amazon or somewhere. His guides had hammocks, and he was wishing he did too instead of a tent because of all the creepy crawly things on the ground.
