    ring suspension

sorry if this has been asked before.

i just added rings for a ring suspension to my hh expedition and was planning on cutting the excess rope off. what is the best way to prevent the ends from fraying and coming apart after i cut it?
    thank you for your responces.

    Melt them with a lighter.

    You can:
Use a lighter and burn the ends of the ropes.
Use a very small diameter rope and use it to wrap the ends of the rope that you just cut, see this example:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMq9KdOtSJ0
Use a heat shink tube that you can buy in an electronics/electrical supply stores.
    Any combination of the above.

As long as its a synthetic fiber, buring the ends will melt them into a glob and prevent them from coming apart. I always like to take my fingers and smooth the glob out before it hardens.

Expect that glob of synthetic material to stick like instant glue and burn your digits. Ouch!!!! Might want to have wet fingers or a dish of water handy

Well... Its a matter of timing.... The glob cools pretty quick... So I wait a second or two. I also dont really pull it off, I just shape it so its smooth.

But the water isnt a bad idea... And I have calloused hands and fingers.

Timing is important. You only have to make that mistake one time to remember not to grab that melted stuff too quickly.

I've come across this too in setting up my garden hammock. Thanks for asking @azoth. How far up the rope should we melt? Will it be stronger/make any difference if it is melted through 1/2", 1", etc?

Use the edge of the lighter to flaten the glob, that will save the fingers. You can reheat a bit to form it. Callouses do help as well.
