    Newb - help!

Getting a HH Hyperlite for Father's Day, but haven't ever used a hammock. Looking for 3 season use for starters. Thinking about a JRB Shenandoh quilt for summer. Already have a nice 20 degree down bag. Looking for help on pads and any advice you have for somebody who hasn't slept in a hammock for 30 years!

Since it's summer don't worry about insulation so much. I'd get a bigger tarp first, like a MacCat or something.

As far as pads go, I would suggest you head to WalMart and by one of the cheap, blue CCF pads in the camping section. Only like $5-6 and you can trim them down to fit your size. They can't be beat for the price.

    Welcome to the forum Dawg,

I own a Hyperlight myself and it is a great hammock. I'm also looking into making a longer hammock. Around 10 feet. Would use it more in colder weather when the lack of a bug net would not be an issue. Might even look at making a bugnet. Most of the DIY (Do it yourself) crowd on this site rave about how much more comfortable the longer hammocks are. The Hyperlight is sweet and you are sure to be pleased with it.
Like Headchange4u said, the Wally World blue pad is hard to beat when it comes to pads. Trim off 6 inch triangles on all 4 corners and it will fit in the hammock much better.

For pads I much prefer the Gossamer Gear thinlight pads. Their 1/4" thick pad can be obtained extra wide for trimming for a hammock.

    Dowgu, Funbun, et al,

I agree on the larger tarp...

However, you must get and use a viable bottom insulation plan of some kind because most folk will experiance bottom/side chill after 20-30 minutes of hanging in weather as warm as 75 degree, certainly 70 degrees, and expect a miserable nite at 65 and below with just a summer bag.
