Smile Can I sew insulation directly to the bottom of my hammock?

    Hey guys!

I am building my fourth bridge hammock and I wanted to sew a thin layer of Climashield Apex to the underside and then cover it with Argon 67. I have never NOT used an underquilt or sleeping pad in the night so I can't think of any issues of making my "underquilt" permanent other than the possibility that it might compress easier if sewn directly to the hammock body. This would keep the insulation directly where I want it every time I set up my hammock, I don't have to spend extra time setting up my underquilt while making camp, and it removes one layer of the "underquilt" since the hammock body will be used as the upper side of the "underquilt".

Has anyone else done this? I am not worried about flexibility for warmer temps since most of my trips are in the winter and shoulder seasons. My only worry is that the insulation will be pointless when sewn directly to the hammock because it may (some how?) be compressed by my body weight in a way that real underquilts don't. I do recall a gentleman making a hammock out of cubin fiber with down baffles but other than that I haven't seen this done before.

Thanks for any information you can give me!

Fireinmybones with Bonefire gear has pretty much mastered the integrated UQ. I'd shoot him a message for more info.

Thank you! I haven't heard of Bonfire gear but it is great to see that an integrated UQ actually works.

It really is the ideal system. Though a bit complicated to make, with triple differential cut etc. Also do a search for theclark5. He made me a climashield insulated hammock using a bit different methods that works pretty well, and is much easier to diy. Although, from what I understand, you aren't using a traditional GE hammock most of the time, I still think it is very possible to incorporate these ideas. Integrated UQs, when done correctly, eliminate ALL drafts and set up fiddle. You also get rid of the quilt suspension weight, and can map the insulation to your body. Super nice after a long day

Your idea sounds intriguing with a bridge hammock especially. I'm curious to know how it turns out

I thought about using theclark5 s method with a bridge, but the truth is, an underquilt fits so well on a bridge hammock that an integrated one isn't really needed. Plus you need a double layer for it to work most of the time, and definitely if you are using baffles with a bridge hammock.

Happy to help if you have any questions. I have made several more with the Costco down throws and have been pleased with outcomes. I personally don't like sewing to a single layer hammock as it leaves stitches on the bottom of the hammock.

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing once I complete my integrated tarp. If you end up making it post up some pics.

Why? Is it because there will be stitches on the hammock body like TheClark said?

Yes, and also it will act as the top layer of the quilt so it can be different sized than the other hammock layer to limit compression. You can use an outer layer like argon 90 or a membrane material so it will not weighmuch at all. If you use theclark5s method, everything attaches to the sides of the hammock so that doesn't really apply.
