    Potential "convert" made.

I just got back from a 2 nighter at RRG with my work partner, a DEDICATED groundling. Just as we were fixin to "pass out" for the night last night, he said, and I quote word for word: "So, how much for a hammock? I now know that's the way I am going to have to go!"

I nearly fell out of my hammock, but I stayed cool & told him the price range as I remembered it. He has been making fun of me for some time now, but I think Friday night he slept awful at the perfect (for a groundling) campsite: level SOFT ground, near a babbliing stream, etc. And as he was already in bed, I think he foresaw another bad night. AM today, "I slept AWFUL! How did you sleep?" I had to tell the truth, "GREAT! Just like my bed at home!" Yea, he knows I sleep in my hammock at home, so he hit me

That's great. I remember helping him with his tent at East Fork last fall. Getting a hammock and dropping 20 lbs from his pack, is he AT bound soon yet?
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Once you try a hammock using a tent just doesn't make sense any more.

I suspect he actually took of closer to 30 Lbs, but as i didn't lift the old pack weight, I'm not sure.

His first (since yesterday) weight reduction plan will be removing the side pockets on his pack, an easy 3/4 LB weight loss (the pockets are HUGE!) With the benefit of putting his weight closer to center. We already took off the top pocket, a smaller over all pocket that weighed at least 1/2 lb empty. And, he has practiced w the tent, can set up almost as fast as me w my hammock & tarp.
Not AT bound so much as in a thru hike. But I am betting that he becomes a section hiker soon. I suspect that if I wasn't planning a 20 day section next year, he would go w me, but I get quite a few more PTO (vacation) hours than he do.

Now all we have to do is convert his wife & we are golden!
My wife is an easy convert to hammocking, but she absolutly cannot hike more than about 1 mile due to bad assorted body parts (back, knees, etc) so, for us its still just car camping. But, she lets me hike almost whenever I want, so it's cool.

Unless you're in the desert like most PCT hikers. Where do you think all this ultralight stuff came from anyway?

    Drive by convert

I was explaining my hammock and its use in the WMNF to friends here in New Hampshire. They like to hike and camp quite a bit. So I pulled my HH Explorer out, and hung it in their front yard. They understood immediately how much easier it is to find stealth hangs than stealth tent sites. Then each climbed in, curled up, and audibly groaned with pleasure.

We have two new converts. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

The funny part was that while we were doing this, a woman neighbor was driving past (on this very quiet residential street). She stopped the car, came over to look at this thing, asked a bunch of questions, was dumbfounded at the elegant simplicity of the idea, and went on her way converted.
