    Underquilt Chambers

Do you think that using more chambers say 10 would help avoid down compression versus 7 chambers on an underquilt. Will be using differential baffles also?

Differential baffles will definitely help. Number of baffles depends on size and placement. Each baffle adds weight, too...so the specific design you're thinking about will determine what's most efficient. In general, though, more baffles will keep down from shifting more than it will help avoid compression.

I assume you mean migration and not compression when you area talking about using more baffles.

More baffles do indeed help keep the down in place. I (and I believe some of the other gear makers on here) have found that the more down you put into the quilt, the less you have to be concerned with it shifting enough to create dead or cold spots. Under normal conditions of course.

If you do have enough down in the quilt then adding more and more baffles just starts to add weight and time to the project. Of course this is just my take on the subject.

Will be using differential baffles also?
Using differential baffles is about the best way to avoid compressing the insulation.

Edit: Beat me to it Jeff.....right on.

on my first DIY underquilt, i'm having compression problems and a little bit of migration problems. i did used differential baffles. the inner shell chambers are 6 1/2" and the outer is 8". I thought that would be enough, but i don't believe so. i'm just trying to figure out the problem, so it doesn't happen again. My size is 5' 5" and 110 lbs, small build. maybe i should just measure my radius and go from there. any thoughts?

Sounds like you have enough differential on the width...what about the length?
How much longer is the outer shell than the inner shell?

Is your outer shell longer than your inner one? It could just be pulling from the ends and compressing that way. I know a lot of people use the 1"-wider-on-the-outside rule of thumb, so I imagine 1.5" is fine. I just realized I have this problem on my quilt (outer shell not longer enough) I'm making and have yet to figure out how I'm gonna compensate.

    Hope that helps,
    Acer

Edit: Hah, beat me to the punch, Stormcrow.

Laherb: the quilt curves end to end also, and if the outer shell's not longer, it will pull up against the inner one and compress the down.
It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Yes, The UQ should be "box" shaped with sides and ends the same width as the baffles. 2" baffles will result in 4" longer and wider outer shell after hem allowances

That is exactly right. I would add that that is the minimum the outer shell should be larger than the inner shell. I also make the outer shell longer throughout the length of the shell and not just on the ends to compensate for the thickness of the baffles.

I am not sure how clear I am being (probably not very)...sorry.

Your right, I should have said a minimum of twice the baffle height added to length and width of outer shell after hem allowance.

I also make the outer shell longer throughout the length of the shell and not just on the ends to compensate for the thickness of the baffles.

Clear as mud, the bad thing is I understand what your are saying
