A little bit of everything along southern Sheltowee

We originally planned a very aggressive hike along the sheltowee. We had planned to start in Kentucky and go south. Good thing we are flexible. My buddy had some last minute health issues and the heat index curbed our enthusiasm so we re arranged the itinerary. Truck based loops and some good old fashioned lolly gagging made for a great week.
For the first time ever I went down with heat exhaustion. Thankfully I know the signs and I've seen it before in the Army.

A few hours of down time and using evaporative cooling saved the day. We later learned the heat index was over 110. During this week's hike we developed a theme, a dry butt is a wonderful thing! If we weren't sweating our rears off it was raining.

That's not a sub tropical forest. That is near the twin arches. I used a lightheartgear.com rain coat this trip. It kept the rain off and the sweat in.
Saw my first bear while out in the woods, she was feeding her cubs. Fun to watch from a safe distance.

The hiking highlight of this trip was the HONEYCREEK LOOP. This is a must do hike if you are up for it. It took us 8 hours to do less than 6 miles. The views into the area are straight out of Jurassic Park

The hike takes you through a lush jungle like experience where you get to scramble, hop, and slide away.

Humidity was through the roof and a thunder storm hit us while we were swimming in the river. Once again, being dry is awesome.

I want to shamelessly plug Charit Creek Lodge. You have to hike to it,it's near the twin arches. Great people run this place. Food is awesome and the feel of this place can't be beat. No electricity!
Another trip in the books and I already can't wait to hit the trail again.

Looks like you were in the jungles of South America. Instead of CBS you had WBS!

I see your friend had a t**t. How'd that work out for him?

Looks like a beautiful area, I'd love to hike there someday. Thanks for sharing!

He is a fairly experienced tenter. We did pass up spots I would have stayed at though in order to get him some flat ground. Widow makers were a big deal this trip as well. Lots of down trees too.

The Honey Creek loop is awesome, I did it last fall in drizzling rain and 50ish temperatures. I'll bet the water felt awesome given the heat. Looks like a fun/hot trip, thanks for the report.

Wow that river looks different. We went swimming in it and it was bath tub hot. Found a spring feeding it and cooled off there for a few minutes. The sky got ugly and we heard thunder so we got while the getting was good. The canopy is so thick not a lot of rain gets to you.
