A friend's mother picked this beauty up at an estate sale for $25. She gave to us Necchi_Alco.jpg

I know, right!? And they're heavy too. But that's the kind of quilts she makes. At least now she can finish them herself.

She assures me though, that I can join two halves of a silnylon tarp with it.

I took a down topquilt I made to our sewing circle once and said: "Look ladies, here's what a REAL quilt looks like." I got some funny looks until one of them wrapped up in it and said: "Wow! This is warm!"

It's a Necchi BF. This is a high quality straight stitch machine. Necchi's have tight tolerances and unless it has been regularly used, it is probably 'stiff' from varnished oil/lack of oil which is easily remedied.

    Definitely worth considering.

That's a fine machine, though it will only do a straight stitch. A real work horse and worth saving. I have a matching BU.

That is a great machine! I have the exact same model but in tan color. So smooth! I converted Judith to a foot pedal though; I never could get used to the sideways knee thing.

I just bought a singer 4423 to make some DIY hammocks and gear. I can't believe I am so excited about sewing... wait it's not sewing it's custom gear fabrication!

I would like to add to this post with what I am using.
    It is a 1969 Kenmore.
My wife's Grandmother gave to us a couple years ago in really good shape. I found all I needed to know through online searches. I used it for the first time about a month ago to make my first hammock. It seems to work quite well.

Very nice. I had one very similar recently sold it to make room for other machines. I think the Kenmore's are really solid machines.
