@zooshooter - I got an even feed foot attachment (a.k.a., 'walking foot') for my 500A from shop.sew-classic.com for $15 or so. Make sure you get the Singer slant shank compatible one instead of the low shank one. I have been very happy with it.

In general there are three different domestic machine types:

    - standard low shank machines with snap-on feet
    - standard high shank machines
    - Singer slant shank machines (not all Singer machines are slant machines, but most are)

    https://www.anniescatalog.com/pages/which_foot.html

In order to use standard snap-on feet on a standard high shank machine (build before 1980) you can buy a presser foot adaptor for standard high shank machines. It took me a while to find a cheap one on Ebay for about 5$ (including shipping fees).

I have a question and I know I'll find my answer here
I have an old maintenance guide that calls for using kerosene as a cleaning fluid (eek!). What can I use as an alternative? Don't want to burn my house down, I need it to sew in.
    Thanks in advance

Alcohol, drip it on over a cookie sheet, rotate the parts to work in, then lube

If your machine is varnished this will free it up faster than anything. It's not a strong odor either.

What you don't use run through you mower to clean the varnish from ethanal in our gas

My new "thread injector" purchased over the weekend. So far seems to do great.

Costco 145 bucks after "35 dollar instant rebate".

    Brother XR3240

Iinitial testing in 1.0 silnylon is promising! Also sewed some webbing to make tree straps - no problems there.

Costco had good return policy so I'll see how it does in coming months.

Ps - "thread injector" seems an unwieldy term. Lol

The flash point of kerosene is 100°-150°F and is considered "combustible" rather than "flammable". On the other hand, the flash point of alcohol is 53°-79°F and is considered "flammable".

    For comparison:

    Singer Sewing Machine Oil: 160°F
    Gasoline: -45°F
    Diesel fuel: 126°F
    Jet fuel: 100°F

You're much safer using kerosene than alcohol.
