I guess I was looking for an enabler, but I guess I should pass on this one. Thanks for the advice. I should probably look for a portable one next anyway. ..
Reverse can be lived without but it's like living without TP. It's pretty handy.
Jerry,
I have an opportunity to purchase a vintage Singer 500a called a Rocketter for $100. I'm told it is mechanically perfect. Would you feel this is an adequate machine to get started on DIY projects in regards to hammock gear? Thanks, jw

Jaydub is right, $100 seems a little high unless it has the attachments. However, I have seen them go as high as $300+ with all the attachments and cams. The 500a is a great machine and I would pay $100 for one in the right condition; you don't see them up for sale as often as they once were. I LOVE my Rocketeer and I paid $65 for her; there are better deals to be had but you REALLY gotta look for 'em, or get lucky...

I brought home a new toy yesterday which I'm looking forward to trying it on the winter tarp I'm planning on making this week. It is a Davis New Vertical Feed from about 1918. The really neat thing is that it is a needle feed. It's my first shuttle machine, so I'm sure there will be a little learning curve with that. It cleaned up halfway decent, I just need to use some restore a finish on it and learn how to repair veneer at some point. I found a nice video of the feed operation as well.
