    IA> Yellow River Forest - Nov 4-6

Grabbing the horns and planning dates a little early this year.

    Nov 4, 5, 6

    Yellow River Forest
729 State Forest Rd, Harpers Ferry, IA 52146
    Parking lot: 43.170175, -91.249093

Friday Night, Nov. 4 - Glen Wendel (43.166118, -91.259394) 7:00 p.m. or whenever you arrive. If you are the first to arrive, make a fire would ya?

    Saturday Night, Nov. 5 - Brown's Hollow (43.153873, -91.229473)

##Parking## at rangers station is .7 mile hike to Glen Wendel
If you choose to hike to Brown's Hollow from Glen Wendel it is approx 3.0 miles. Otherwise, there is parking at the Brown's Hollow trailhead (43.152005, -91.235939)

##Water## There is potable water at the ranger station. There is a scummy pond at Glen Wendel if you are desparate. There is also a creek at Brown's Hollow that sometimes has water. It was dry last year.

Any clue what the distance is between points? How far we'd be hiking?

Click here: http://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/...r-State-Forest and scroll to the bottom and click "hiking map". The first night camp spot, Glen Wendel, is only .7 miles from the parking lot. The second night, Brown's hollow, is 1.5? miles from Glen Wendel. It's got some elevation changes but fairly easy. There is a road that you can drive on down to brown's hollow, which quite a few from last year opted to do.

My wife and I spent a weekend up there a couple months ago and hiked all 4 sites. Glen Wendel isn't bad at all, super easy hike, just a bit of elevation. We walked it after 2 inches of rain had just fallen the night before and it was a little slick and super hot and humid. The trails from Glen wendel on are well kept and wide. There was a really nice stream behind browns hollow and plenty of trees. Our favorite overall though was John Schultz.

-note- there is only cell reception in 2 spots in the entire park that we found. 1 at John Schultz and one about 1/2 mile from heffron hill.. even in the parking lot there was nothing. So if that's important to you, keep that in mind.

John Schultz is quite nice, I want to try and get a night in at that little rouge camp near there. I only picked Glen Wendel for the first night because it is closer to the parking, since a number of us arrived well after dark.

That little camp you are talking about has the best views of any of the grounds. I also want to stay there yet this year.
