I believe straight stitch is better. That's what I did on my hammock and have had no problems. I use it often. Outings about once a month and hang it indoors in between. Been using it for 2-3 years now.
I think the zig zag stitch creates more stress on the material at each zig and zag.

About the only thing you might want a zigzag stitch for is if you needto make a buttonhole. Other than that straight stitch is all you need.

May or may not be correct, but this ebay listing (scroll down) claims it is a "Jolson sewing machine badged for Simpson's department stores in Canada", which may or may not help.

Yeah, straight stitch should work great. Enjoy the machine!

I have an injector that does zig-zags too, which I like. It lets me put "bar tacks" on my projects. I use this at tie-outs on tarps, channel openings on knotty-mods, and most of all, on attachment points for the bikepacking bags I make. But, honestly, anything hammock related doesn't need bar tacks. I just like the look a little better than the boxed-x or "z" stitching for high stress points.

Zig-zag stitches are classifed as stretch stitches and would be used on seams that would be required to actually stretch in length. Straight stitches has worked good for everything I have made although I have used some zig-zag just for a change and for fun.
