    Just playing around...

Sooooo I have the camping itch BAD!!!! Things have finally settled down from a move and job change so now, I've got to get back in the woods. Or at least outside. Or at least play with gear. Tentative solo trip planned for next week but, that wasn't enough for me today. I scoured our (mostly pasture) acreage and no trees were cooperative to hammock hanging and since the hubby has not gotten around to putting in some posts for gear fiddling... I mean hammock lounging... I played with those "what if scenarios".

Like, what if I was somewhere I couldn't hang? Would my gear really go to ground as well as I think it will? What if my local state park decided hammocks were against the rules? Would I have to buy more gear?

    Conclusion:
Gear goes to ground fine! Bug net becomes a bivy sack, tarp goes up with minimal fuss, and the ground cloth is a good size.

Ok project over. He needs to get those posts in NOW! Lol

So are you using a pad in your hammock instead of underquilt? You using a top quilt or sleeping bag? Very nice set up if needed!

looks like that set up works pretty good if you needed to go to ground. Those are things I'v been thinking about lately, looking at places online to go but never having been there to see if there's good places to hang

I generally use a pad or peapod system made from a sleeping bag. Just haven't had the funds to invest in an underquilt. That is also with using my husband's ENO bug net as a bivy bag.

I left it setup overnight to see how well it does with the dew and such. We'll see in a few hours!

I guess it's a good thing to be flexible. I don't know though, if I had to sleep on the ground I'm not sure I'd stay out at all.

Thanks for this post. I didn't think that I would have much problem hanging a hammock in my region, since there is always a stand of trees somewhere. But, the ash borer has changed the scene a bit. Now, it can be a challenge to find a spot that isn't overhung with dead ash trees. Having another option is always a plus.

The important thing is now ya know. Worse case scenario, you have a plan.

Good job on the practice. I have, upon occasion, been forced to ground but in my case without a pad. When it's been hot summer I just pile up leaves and call it good with tarp pitched over me, quilt over me and hammock around me. (don't want crawly things off the debris on me)

If it is colder temps and I can not get enough debris together, I will collect a bunch of wood, build a fire, put my sit pad next to a tree, wrap up in my tarp and quilts, and call it a pretty sleepless night. For one night it is doable. Would not want to miss more than a nights sleep

Nice improv but how do you camp in the south with the heat and humidity?

Many of us do not. We do the bulk of our camping in the three seasons that do not include July and August. We not only avoid the heat/humidity but at least some of the bugs.
