I'm using the square knot so I can take the leader off of the strap if I need to get it closer to the tree. In that instance, I'm using the huggers as straps. You can then use a MSH, becket hitch, j-bend to attach the strap to the leader. If you splice the leader directly on to the end of the loop you can still do a MSH closer to the tree but you lose a little bit of the strap length. Also, you need to create a larger spliced loop.

I'd prefer a shorter strap and longer leader. I have Ti LoopAliens on the CLs on my hammock and can use Amsteel and/or Dynaglide leaders. I've never needed all the strap length I have. Longer leader seems more versatile than longer straps...

    OK, you piqued my interest.
How does one go about splicing cord to webbing?

Wow. I recently picked up spyderline for guylines and ridgelines, but never considered using it as suspension. Certainly cheaper than amsteel since I have a bunch left over..

    Looking forward to hearing more.

Sorry, that may sound confusing. As far as I know you can't splice the cord directly into the strap. What I was referring to was splicing the loop end of cord onto the loop end of tree huggers (loops on both ends). I was comparing the splice to the square knot saying that the splice would be stronger.

That's what I like about it, the price. It's not as cheap as amsteel. But, it's one if not the only options that can support over 1000 lbs and has a polyester sheath. Worth experimenting with.
