    Is it enough?

A buddy and I are planning a trip at the end of October on the north end of the AT in Maryland (Pen Mar). Nighttime temps are projected to be in the 30s. I have an Ember 2 underquilt and a Spark topquilt. I'm wondering if I should take something a little extra. I read in a thread somewhere that a pad and a sleeping bag liner would help. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

ENO's website states the Ember 2 UQ is rated for 50 degrees. Personally I would want something that is rated a bit warmer if I was expecting temps in the 30s.

Take some of those larger Hot Hands (body size I believe). Once you exceed the UQ rating it doesn't do anything to protect you. A blue foam pad will help if you can't upgrade your UQ. I would work in that direction if I were you...

How long are you going to be on the trail? If more than a couple of nights then I wouldn't risk it. You could ruin a good hike by freezing. I personally wouldn't risk temps in the 30 with anything less than a 20 degree set.

If you're taking gear rated for 50* F, and you're facing temperatures in the 30s, you are asking for trouble. Besides, the reviews I've seen indicated that ENO quilts don't even perform to their rating very well, so they're definitely not going to perform below their rating.

Good advice, all. Looks like I need to upgrade for winter camping. Like I needed an excuse. One can never have too much camping gear, or too many guitars.

At least your second hobby, hammock camping gear, is dirt cheap compared to your first hobby guitars.
There are many tricks to staying warm while winter camping (hot water bottle, chem hand warmers, insulated sleepwear)
but you really do need a good quality basic winter set of quilts and a good tarp.

If your looking at the 30's for temps buy a 20* Down under and top quilts.... Idea is to keep a 10* buffer cause the forecast is never right and you don't want to be miserable..
