He did...3 hours before your last post here, apologizing directly to you for his choice of words. But you chose to dig a foxhole & double down on your perceived insult without finding out.

Bottom line is that no matter what forum you go to or use you need to have a thick skin (I have to remind myself to do the same!). Things said online these days are tougher, rougher and downright more insulting due to the perceived notion that you are disconnected via electrons. Half the stuff you say online you wouldn't dare to say to the same person face-to-face (well...maybe some would...).

In any case, he made a statement, you were insulted, he apologized. Let's all move along...nothing else to see here....

Well, I waded through the whole thing and still come back to the basic fact that OutandBack simply stated the same thing I, and others, have said in the past. When I was young there were two levels of camping. They were roughing it and smoothing it for names as good as any other. The rough it crowd had way too much gear and way too much weight. The smooth it folks figured out how to eliminate a lot of things they did not need to carry so less gear=less weight and often a better time. Now we have the third group. The ultralight folks have a point but they also miss one. Lower weight does help breed lower weight but one also needs sufficient weight to be safe and comfortable. I see where O&B is coming from. I do not know his rule of thumb but I can tell you mine. The first time you are unprepared so cold, wet or hungry I will probably give you a hand. The second time you do it I will probably tell you no. I have my spare dry clothes and extra food and some survival first aid gear in case I need it. If you do not you made an informed choice to take your chances so pay the price. You own the choice and the results.

FWIW I am going to toss in a second point. The issue of cheap/heavy gear is not the issue. Most of us started there and some of us moved on in different ways. The issue in point was folks who try to go too light by not taking basic gear or enough food and who do not develop the skills to manage in the wilderness. It's a totally different set of decisions.

I'll settle this one. Dakota was hanging UL, in the woods. Period.

The conspiracy was started by O&B and his campaign supporters, and now ended by me.
