Hangnout, I was looking over the old posts because I'm interested in making a double layer bridge. How much wider did you make the bottom layer? With that measurement, what size pad will fit (height wise)?

I made mine with the bottom layer 1/2" wider than the top layer. I have been in the hammock without a pad and up to 1 1/2" thermorest self inflating pad. There is tension on both layers of the hammock in any of these combinations. I'm sure it varies between the top and bottom layer depending on the pad used. I used some WM $1 fabric that is about 1.4 oz per yard for the hammock.
The thicker pad did reduce the squeeze.

I knew I would only use a ccf pad so I just made them the same size. With .5 pad it really did not matter. The top layer will compensate for anything in the smaller range. If you plan on using anything bigger maybe do something like Walking Bear. It is kind of like a regular two layer hammock. I always made those the same size.

Mine is 1.1 and I have had no problems. Main layer is 1.9.

Grizz, I see you cut 82X54 with a six inch cut on your latest bridge.
I just looked back over my specs and they are 90X60 with a 12 inch cut.
I'm using a 42" spreader at the head end and that's fine with me (shoulder squeeze wise).
So you are saying the narrower and shallower cut will allow me to use a shorter spreader for the same width?
Do you think going from 60 to 54 and 12 to 6 would give me the same width if I was to use a 36" spreader?
The double is churning in the head.....
Probably gonna sleep out again tonight. We don't get in the 30s that often so it's nice to try out 'colder' weather lol!

Also, back on pg 98 or so turkey boy showed us how he attached his poles by burning a hole through the webbing. Ideas flew after that and I wondered if anything new came up. I'm interested in doing something like this on the next creation. I was thinking about doing it for the .625 7075 poles that have that point at the end.

To a first approximation, the ratio of the spreader bar length to the fabric length under the spread defines the squeeze (not entirely true because as we tinker with spreader and fabric width, your shoulders are staying the same width. But again, to a first approximation...)

so if you are using 42 inches of spreader bar over 60 inches of fabric, that's more or less equivalent to 36 inches of spreader bar over 51.4 inches of fabric (because 42/60 = 36/51.4 )---essentially what I have (remember you lose 3 inches of width due to the roll of webbing).

The business about cut depth doesn't affect shoulder squeeze so much as the width of the hammock in the middle. The 6" cut leaves the middle at 54-3-2*6 = 39 inches. Right now you have 60-2*12 = 36 inches.

Finally figured a good way to attach my spreader bars (hiking poles) to the SMC rings on my DIY bridge. Thanks to Grizz's updated bridge article for the tips.
I just sewed a couple of 1" pieces of polyester webbing in a cross pattern and then sewed a piece around the end to prevent it from slipping. 2" wide webbing might have worked better but may have been harder to sew. It was a royal PITA to sew. No room to work. Broke a couple of needle.
On the tip end of the poles, I'm using the rubber tip attachments.
