I'm going to try an make it. I have a little bit of conflict with scouting on Sun. but might be able to work it out. I like hiking but I am assuming the trip we'll be for tweaking setups for Mt. Rogers.

Preference noted. Some folks don't quite have all their winter gear quite set yet though, and would want to test slightly closer to their cars in case they need to get something out, but I understand your wanting to hike in further.
At Mount Rogers hangout we hike in a short distance to get to Wise shelter, similar distance at the MAHHA hangout. Not a 5 mile long hike in, but what, maybe a mile in or so?

There are closer in sites from the trail head at Rt 24/27. Don't recall if suitable for a hammocking group but I'll check them out. I'm going this Sunday PM to Tuesday to do the 20 mile "Figure 8" BP there on the Uwharrie and Dutchmans Creek trails.
I THOUGHT GETTING OLDER WOULD TAKE MUCH LONGER.

The group sites are very wooded as best I can remember.
I wouldnt mind chippin in for a group site.
I received my Uwharrie and Birkhead Wilderness maps yesterday. It does look like the Yates Place camp would work fine. Trails nearby for those who are wanting to hike.

This is a very cool site. It has a bathroom, etc. It is also the start of the Uwharrie trail. There is potential for a great dayhike here. You can hike the section of the UT from Yates Place to the 109 parking lot and it is less than 5 miles I think. I have hiked this alot of times and camped on the little creek that runs paralell with the trail about halfway to the 109 parking lot. Good suggestion. I will be there. It is clearly marked by signs and should be really easy to find for everyone.
What is the closest city so I can program the car gps..once I get to the NF where is everybody parking and is it safe-I got broken into last December in the Pisgah NF doing Looking Glass Rock...dont want to repeat that.
Troy is the closest city. Yates Place is "On SR 1146, 5 miles West of Troy, NC" according to this link.
Coordinates: approximately (never been there) 35.3655°N 79.9856°W -ish.
