If weight wasn't an issue and you really wanted to save some cash, converting a cheap synthic bag to an UQ wouldn't be too hard. Probibly be able to do the whole thing for $50 or less.

You're right about the Climashield cost. The remaining cost includes the cord locks (anchorable cord locks are impossible to find), grosgrain, and yards of elastic cord. Some are one time costs, like extra pins, thread, etc. That's why the cost savings are offset by the hassle factor.

I did find that the cord locks don't hold the elastic cord well and I usually put a stopper knot after the cord lock to prevent slippage.

When I am making a lot of my gear, it is more about making it than the time factor. My time there for awhile was worthless, I had a lot extra on my hands. I figure if I can save $10 an hour if I am busy, then it is worth it cost wise though.

But like you said that hassle factor is different for everyone. But thinkfully we have other people who like to make them.

Not sure whether to revive a long dead thread or start a new one, so here goes:

Because I know my limitations, I having my mother sew me a KAQ. My question is, how small will this get in a compression sack? I realize that the synthetic fill will limit the compression more than down, but does anyone have any ballpark volume estimates?

I've seen Doctari's KAQ and it packs down fairly small, about the size of a loaf of bread maybe a little smaller.

Has anyone made a down version of the KAQ? Tried a search but didn't find anything...

My KAQ wouldn't compress nearly that small. Maybe twice that, at best. YMMV.

I sold it some time ago, or I'd measure it for you.

Mine won't compress that small. The difference may be that when Griz had it made, he chose the two layer option.
