I use a Z-packs goose down hood, if really cold add another hat on the inside (wool or blackrock down depending on what I packed), I also use 1/16 bungee cord to keep it from pulling off unless desired (slide in arms both sides).goose_hood_green_side_m.jpg

Using a down mummy bag in the hammock, I just keep my head in the hood of it with that cinched up about halfway. I'll keep a balaclava handy inside the mummy bag with me, so when my face does start to get cold, I'll just grab that and put it on at that time. I've tried putting the balaclava on soon as I got in the hammock, but I found I have a harder time falling asleep like that. Being half asleep and cold early in the morning though, it doesn't bother me at all.

I pull my TQ up above my head. Face completely covered. I use a cpap so the air is pushed in to me. That's how i sleep at home as well.
I would rather be in the woods... my dog would rather be in the pool. My wife thinks we are both nuts.

Warm nose: I pull my cap down over the tip of my nose. If really cold, underneath the cap I pull down a buff - again to just cover the tip of my nose.

I noticed if I use a wool cap to do this, it holds more moisture than my acrylic caps do, so my nose isn't as warm I love wool! Just not in this case.

Shug's fleece bib, hung from the ridgeline will reduce moisture on your TQ. Haven't tried one yet, though.

Use a clean tshirt draped over my head down to about 35. Below that do the same with a fleece sweater. Been fine for me down to 15F which is my record low. Doesn't get that cold over here in Georgia. By draping the tshirt or fleece I don't feel claustrophobic like I do with a buff and it's easy to vent and not feel like I'm smothering. Usually can vent sufficiently where moisture is not a problem.

Thanks guys I just ordered one of those Buff's to try. Thanks for all the ideas. Last night I slept in my Warbonnet Ridge Runner, tonight I'm going to give my Blackbird XLC a whirl. I love the cooler weather and the fact that it hasn't rained but .2" here in almost 3 months means no tarp required.

    sockel

I tried other coverings over my face but too restrictive. I had a great deal of pain in my sinuses for a couple of months following a -16°F night and had to come up with something. I just wanted to keep the warm air around my nose and came up with not a snorkel but what I refer to is my sockel.

Took an old comfy wool sock that was worn out and cut it heal to just before the toe area. You wear this thing around your head and breath through the section where your foot normally goes in. So the toe area is on the back of the head. Yeah it makes me laugh even describing it. Cut the calf section, the breathing tube, to what ever length you want. I roll the sock back, nose area, to stiffen it up a bit. Pick out a sock that's soft, warm and comfy. And yes, if you want you can even clean it before wearing. Attached are photos. You'll scare your self if not other campers when wearing this but it does work.

I like the sockel. I'm trying that, I have some old green wool socks left over from my USMC days. I love this forum!
