Day Hike (Long Island) and Gear Test

Went on a day hike to do some winter gear testing. It snowed about 2 feet on the East Coast Blizzard on Saturday and I've been dying to test out some of my winter gear. Had the day off today and jumped at the opportunity. Plus today was a cold and clear day.

    Here are the videos:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0Qrq1PYRPk

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgZLM1UUALM

Here's the list of the gear I packed (weights in ounces):

    Back Pack:
    REI Flash 65 50

    Sleep System:
    WB Blackbird 35.2
    Superfly w/Doors 28.6
    JRB Mt Wash 4 33
    M. Hardwear Lyell bag -15* 56
    Stakes (all) 6.8

    Cooking System:
    Krazy Cooking Kit 7.8
    Bongo w/case 2.9

    Hydration System:
    Klean Kanteen 10
    Sigg 5.4
    Canteen Cozies (DIY) 4.8
    Aquamira Drops 3.3

    Clothing (Winter):
    Down Jacket 17.2
    Montbell Therma Wraps 9.9
    Smart wool top 7.9
    Smart wool bottom 5.8
    1 Wigwam Winter Socks 3.2

    Misc Gear
    Headlamp 1.5
    Paracord 2.4
    Bandana 1.3
    Extra shock cord 1.1
    RAT 3 Knife 7.6
    Camera 6.5
    Med Kit 4.9
    Duct Tape 1.4
    Compass 1
    Fire Kit 4
    Saw 4.7
    Bathroom Kit 3
    Consumables:
    4oz Fuel 4.9
    Food Bag 2.4
    Food 22
    2 Liter of Water 64

    Total Pack (Ounces) 420.3
    Total Pack (Pounds) 26.26lbs

not all the gear was tested that was listed. Wanted to pack it out a bit to test how the pack would handle a decent amount of weight for a 2-3 day trip.

Got to say the REI Flash 65 is awesome.

Nice! That looks like a beautiful place for a getaway! So pretty with all the snow.

Thanks for your report and videos. It's really good to see gear in use!

Good report and nice looking gear. Seeing the deer is the best, ocean looks good, no matter what time of year.

    Thanks for the positive feedback.

Wildwood is a very beautiful park I camped there most of my life. However the park rangers during camping season are jerks so I dont do overnights there anymore.

One thing I wanted to mention in the video but forgot are my trekking poles (REI Traverse). They stink for the simple reason the poles wont expand or retract after the 3rd camping trip I had this season. Dirt must have gotten in the section and prevents them from opening up any more. The first REI brand name product that I didnt like.

Raul, you could try bringing them back to REI. They're pretty good about 'no questions asked' returns.

Tis true, I have never had any issues returning or exchanging items with REI.
