I'm guessing this is a bigger bike than what you need to hide, but the concept is the same:

Need to hide a something big?

    Or in Shug's Piney Woods?

    Switchback length

    ekitel,

The Switchback is 10' long. Any ridge length of 11' or longer should work just fine. I have used our prototype cat-cut tarp several times and the coverage is great. It has a 12' ridge length.

So just get and old camo poncho and go at it with some scissors? Maybe fold it over a certain way like a tie die or paper snowflake? And then spray paint it...

Down the left side of the page, is a list of many netting types/patterns.

I didn't see any red/white/green Christmas camo, though...

ekitel, that stuff is called die-cut camo...it's cheap, light, and you can get it just about anywhere, including Wally.

I'm cooking right now...I'll get you a link later, if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

That is exactly what you do. Or, just lay it flat, pinch a section and cut with scissors or a razor blade. Try to keep certain sized cuts in the same part of the fabric, and paint them a similar color. This will create the illusion of depth an real foliage. I'm looking for a Hennessy fly to shred, but I don't want to spend more that $10 for the project!

Remember that repeating patterns are counter productive, but the smaller each individual element is the more difficult it becomes to detect the pattern. This is why MARPAT, CADPAT, Flektarn, Multicam, Bulldog Mirage, and others work so well. They have micropatterns that combine to make the macropatterns. So, when you make your cuts try to keep most of them small, but mix in larger ones as well.

The stuff I like is a plastic product which makes it waterproof and easy to paint. Also, there is the heavier "military version" which has a string net, and the "ultralight" version that is just die-cut. Most of what I've seen sold to hunters is a burlap printed with a Realtree-type pattern. It will soak up water and make it even heavier than it already is.

In any case I want an inconspicuous color. I understand from Scott Littlefield that it's hard to find silnylon in more subdued colors except for grey and black which don't seem quite stealth enough.

I'm also very interested to try a winter/door type tarp. Using the HH diamond I sometimes have to pass up nicely hidden spots to find one that has more natural wind protection which can be hard to do from the road on a bicycle.

I have no illusions that more stealthy colors will make me invisible. At some point the tarp outline is going to be visible to anybody who's looking at it but if you don't notice it first then you're not going to look at it. Somebody might pass by close enough to notice it but there's always a good chance that they're paying more attention to where they're walking or driving and if they don't catch the color of your gear out of the corner of their eye then they won't notice you.

I don't expect not to be noticed ever, just to minimize it as much as possible while still enjoying a comfortable and convenient hang.
    Late, but as promised:

Just wanted to let you know that BDG tarps are likely to introduce a new color later this month - Treebark Brown. (I just need the waterproofing tests to come in).

A huge winter tarp in brown? Will they be ready for a Fall 2010 purchase?
