Got back Sunday afternoon. The trip was really nice even though it was somewhat foggy Saturday morning. I guess that is to be expected in that area. The site was on the AT where it intersects the Crest trail in the Mt. Rogers NRA. We entered at Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands and went about 3+ miles north using the Rhododendron trail to the AT. It was very difficult in spots but was well worth it. The views were stunning when the weather cleared. I woke Sunday morning to find the ponies about ten feet from my hammock while I was cooking breakfast. The guitar competition in the park was great and we got to see Doc Watson as well as some other fine musicians. Pictures are of our site follow:

As you can see, my wifes location was rather interesting. You can show this to any ground dwelling nay sayers you come across and have a good laugh. Trees suitable for multiple people to hang from are rather scarce so we took what we could get. All in all I think it was a very pretty spot. There was an outcropping of high rocks about a hundred yards away that you could climb and on top it was was a view that defies description. If you haven't been to that area and you get the chance, don't hesitate. Just do it.
When it goes over their heads, it really doesn't matter how high it is.

thanks for the pictures... i love that place!
by your wife's site being interesting, are you talking about being over the loaded fire pit? you could always tell people that she was afraid she would get just to cold before morning
and the rock cliff... yes, i can rarely pass by that spot w/o going up for a look around.
a few of us repelled off the highest part of that little cliff face a couple times. we used the large boulder on top to tie off.
there's an area about a mile away from there where the pine mt trail crosses the horse trail (crest trail?) that has a lot more hammock hanging options. there are a few pictures in my gallery. ...tim
I too will something make and joy in it's making

I know which area you are talking about. I was on the Pine Mt. trail in my pre-hanging days. I will have to get back this fall. I couldn't believe what the western view was on the cliff. It felt like I was in an airplane!!!

It is a beautiful place, and a great place to introduce your wife to hammocks. BD
