    Underquilt size suggestions

I'm about to make an underquilt and I'm trying to decide on a size. I'm 5'8" tall.

It would be nice to do 60" x 48" because the fabric is 60" wide, but is 60" long enough? I'd like to not wish I had made it longer.

Seems like 48" is a pretty standard width. Is that right?

    Thanks.

48 is pretty standard for JRB when they are to be used as a TQ or UQ. However teh Crowsnest, Mt Washington, yeti, and Te-Wa are all in teh 40 to 45" range because they are dedicated UQ. Remember if you have 60" wide material you will need some seam allowance. I use 3 inches on each side but you could get by with less depending on how you hem it. however if you would like a 3/4 UQ 60 inches is just about perfect for the length. I prefer 3/4 to a full UQ myself. If you are putting this on a bridge you can make it even narrower then 42". But I concider 42" minimum for myself, that wraps around my shoulders pretty good. Here is the dimensions of my new winter winter UQ.

    Have fun with it

48" is plenty wide...you can get away with less if you need to, or want to save weight. As Dutch says, starting with a 60" piece of material will get you a 50-56" length of insulated underquilt, depending on how much material you use for seam allowance and drawcord channel. But read up on torso-length, 2/3 or 3/4 length underquilts. You might like the weight savings...I do.

Dutch - valid point re: the width of underquilts, but (just a minor quibble) I use the Mt Washington as a top quilt and it works great. I think my Colorado winter setup is gonna be a Winter Yeti on bottom with a MWUQ4+hood on top.

It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
