Thread resurrection time. I was actually unable to pull this trip off when it was originally planned. But, it’s back in the calendar for the last week of August this year! Can’t wait.

If anybody has any updated information for the area, I would appreciate it.

    Hey DWEpic,

I'll be out there for the first time with a small crew Aug23-1st. Not sure exactly on what route we will take. Considering coming in from the North, Trail Lakes TH. to Gannett Area and back. Anyway, saw you will also be in the areas so figured I would say hey.

We were there 2 years ago, my second trip. First to Ticomb and second to big sandy, lots and lots of people the trails were full of groups. Very warm but still camping ď on the ground looking at spectacular scenery, wow next time maybe my hammock. We would go in September after the crowds thin out, but it can snow and get cold. Ground dwelling is less bulk to pack, but the alpine glow is hard to beat from a hammock!!!

I was just in Huntsville 2 weeks ago for work. I would have been happy to have met up and bought you a beer to discuss the area. Maybe our trails will cross out there.

What time of year were you there that the crowds were thick? I’m thinking last week of August should start to thin things out.

I haven't been in a few years, but the crowds are usually the out of school months, way thinned out after labor day. We usually see few other people after Labor Day. Then again, I spent 30 days straight there June 3rd to July 3rd 1985, and we saw few people. But, we generally camped at places that were not the main attractions like the Cirque of the Towers/Big Sandy in the south and Island Lake/Titcomb in the north, and often traveled off trail. But, some of those experiences were a long time ago and things could have changed. But even as late as 2008, we saw few people after Labor Day.

What is the Griz Bear news in the Winds these days? Any increase in their presence?

The G bears are expanding their way southward into the Winds. But there are not many, especially compared to northward.

Camp in bear country according to sound practices, e.g. camping triangle for sleeping, cooking, and proper food and attractant storage and thus minimize the potential. September is hyper-phagia time for bears as they are on the roam for mo' grub to consume, so just use common sense for camping in bear country and you should do fine.
