    Red face 2017 AT Thru-hike

So, I finally have all my gear and tested it out! I'm so excited to start my thru-hike in Feb!

Will be first thru-hike and also first long term hike with my hammock! New gear though like my quilts and pack!

Not making a thread just to state the obvious but, i wouldn't mind more input on my gear ill be bringing and maybe missing.

    thanks all!

Might want to consider a larger tarp as that edge tarp is not going to offer that much protection, a cuben tarp with doors will only weigh 8 oz.

Best of luck on the hike.

Good luck. That's on my list of things to do is a long distance trail.

Not much warm clothing for February start.

I agree with Gunner, a bigger tarp gives you more options. Also, if you're really trying to cut weight, you can download the kindle app to your iPhone and go without the kindle.

Other than that, I think you're list looks great. You'll undoubtedly make several changes as you go. Remember that February will still be cold, and you'll encounter plenty of snow and ice. Good luck, have fun! Are you doing a Trail Journal, or video diary? If so, let me know so I can follow and live vicariously through you!

I'd add instep crampons for Feb and March.

If you don't want a bigger tarp consider an underquilt protector for feb and march. I'm assuming you are bringing the zip on over cover for the BB?

For warmth and weather protection definitely consider either UQP and top, or a sock if you want to stick to the edge tarp, and don't want to spend 300 on a Cuban tarp.

Regarding the kindle, the advantage of the actual kindle is that the battery lasts for weeks, and you won't drain your phone so it can be ready in emergencies. At least my phone eats battery when the screen is on for extended periods. Just something to consider.

I kinda agree with this, unless you are a crazy warm person, or don't plan on moving if it's 33 degrees and raining. For the cold months are you bringing any long base layers? 33 degrees and raining is just asking for hypothermia. I am guessing your rain coat will double as a shell. Down jackets don't perform optimally as a mid insulation layer. I find mine wets out with condensation even if wearing a breathable rain jacket. A long sleeve mid weight base will add some insulation when moving. You can switch it with a lightweight base as it warms up.

Same goes for bottoms. I'd also consider a lightweight shell layer for bottom for cold months. Even if it's cheap like dri-ducks. I personally rarely wear bottom shells, except in winter, but I rarely hike on below 50 degree days. I just suck up my lower half getting damp, and know my body and hypothermia pretty well. If I was going to be dealing with wet conditions below 50 I'd definitely bring a breathable bottom shell though.

You could loose some weight going with an alcohol stove instead of the jetboil.

    First off welcome to HF

Since you are in Mn I would suggest a week on the SHT with the gear on your list very soon.
Just because you are heading to Ga doesn't mean it will be warmer there in Feb.

I would add rain pants to your list as well as a long base layer, Katoola micro spikes, tyvek overmits, Cf tarp for sure, 2 to 4 squares of a zrest pad for in the shelters in the smokeys.

Lose one pair of underwear, use a digital version of the trail guide on the phone, cut food to 4 days 8lbs.
As you get into warmer weather, north of the Smokeys change out gear, send home the Kindle, and the jetboil, by then you will know why.

Most important Have Fun, good luck on your adventure
