I'm new here and not a thru-hiker (though my son is planning his own trip when he turns 18). However, I live in the mountains of NE GA, and have family in the mountains of E TN.

I can tell you that this winter has been extremely mild thus far. They've even seen mosquitoes in TN this week. However, our winters can be quite unpredictable and I would definitely plan on being equipped to endure a day or two where temperatures do not get above freezing - especially in shady and mountainous areas. It is not uncommon for our mountains to get several inches of snow in March. We can also get plenty of driving winds and thunderstorms in February and March.

Also I absolutely love my Xero shoes. But be sure you practice hiking in them before you hit the trail. They are not like most sandals - but are designed for barefooters and minimalists who have built up the foot and ankle muscles as well as the foot pads.

Hope you have a wonderful trip!

My son Quinn is starting the AT in two weeks. Look for a young guy packing a ULA Epic with Scout, Philmont Ranger and and El Camino patches. He might be the next "Patches".
We just ordered the Xero kits for camp shoes and water crossings.

Hope your hike is going well. I just flew out to Maine and joined my son in the 100-Mile Wilderness at the end of his AT. That's him in the pic.

CONGRATS to you and especially your son. That's some accomplishment. You should be proud.

Not making a thread just to state the obvious but, i wouldn't mind more input on my gear ill be bringing and maybe missing.
