I am gonna play with the Modular Bag, I really like the bivy sack,,,, I would like to come up with a simple combination to use it on a regular basis.

But that EXTREME bag ( ECW)will stay in the gear trailer.......from now on....

It's kinda neat,,, I have the straps alredy adjusted for the Grand Trunk and on one of the Hennessys, I can carry one out side hang it on the stand, put the bag in and don't have to go back in and tell her good night...

I guess my point on all these posts is that a person can get into hammocking, at a low cost and have good enough gear to do pretty cold temps with out having to get TARP money...........

I'm intrigued by the bivy sack.

When I finally get my ICW, I may play around with a center zip bivy out of Tyvek.

I've been watching this thread with keen interest. Not because I'm all that interested, I'm already good to -20f. To me the warmth to weight ratio is a side conversation at best. The real strength to this weight hog is it's warmth to cost ratio. For somebody that doesn't have to carry their gear and tends to be a cold sleeper, I sure can't think of a less expensive way to stay warm. Particularly with the flexibility of this thing. I'm seriously considering getting one of the extreme cold set-ups for Genuine Draft to use at the Colorado Winter Hang in case it's nasty. She an exceptionally cold sleeper and I'm thinking this might allow her to camp with me when I'm cold weather testing.

Thanks for all the leg work you folks have done.

i use the modular system myself and I have found that the bivy and the black bag with a pad in between them is very comfortable and warm. I don`t see myself needing to add the patrol bag unless it is very cold maybe in the teens or below. With the pad inside the bivy you don`t even notice its presence. As far as the bivy gos I couldn`t ever imagine myself sleeping outside without it, even in the summer time I will go with that and a poncho liner and be good to go.

This ECW bag is rated to minus 30. Folks have been using it by itself ( no pad) in the mid teens and doing OK. It will be fascinating to see how it goes at 10 and zero and below, if the opportunity arises. It certainly arise if some of our northern members test this system.

We don't get very low temps down this way, this often, that is why I have been out even on work nights to see how these bags work out.

Here is some pics of a $29.00 camo Grand Trunk and the $89.00 Extreme bag . An inexpensive rig, capable of below freezing temps.
The end box is an after market add on to keep the end of the sleeping bag from wanting to go over the edge.

I know Ya'll are getting tired of this thread...
Thismorning the temp on my GFs car said 17 degrees,

I slept out in tiat Modular bag last night, with only the GT and the bag. no tarp.
I put 2 of the Walmart fleece throws folded in half between the bivy and the green bag. NO condensation or sweat.

The only issue I had and didn't realize it until I got up , was that I had the head flap on the bivy pulled back abit, as the frost would collect, my body heat would melt it and it seeped down inside onto the black bag (inner bag) around the hood.

Clothing, I went with even less this time,
    2 pairs of Walmart socks,
plain cargo pants a t-shirt and a cheapo hooded pull over type jogging jacket. The Modular bag did very well, I am getting used to the side zipper,, but I still like the Extreme bag better.

Randy, IMO this is a great thread! There are many different 'categories' of hammockers here at HF. Not everyone backpacks, or worries about the weight of gear, and most are always interested (nosey ) in whatever works for someone!

Your contribution may have lit bunches of lightbulbs for folks looking for solutions!

Thanks for sharing your experiences and photos!
