I've been toying with the idea of putting a center zipper on a couple of bags I already own.
With that in mind, I've been cruisin' the catalogs, looking at synthetic mummies that are rated for very cold temps. What I'm finding is that they weigh as much as the ICW/ECW bags, which surprised me.

OK, here is something to ponder.
First I have to throw in the
Disclaimer:
This isn't a back packing rig, not the most comfortable hammock for some, made in china, can't lay flat, hard to side sleep but doable, and still needs some mod,,,
BUT... Ya'll that have been following, have seen the posts on these sleeping bags. All these bags, pads and any other interior hammock insulation has a common dinominator.... The insulation compresses on the bottom WE ALL KNOW THAT....
While working dilgently today at the office,,,, and concentrating on stuff,,,, I thought what if????
My thinking was, ok, what if some of the bottom pressure on the bottom insulation is relieved some, So, I'm thinking, if I put the all weather bag in the a hammock, with out a tarp, and it rains where will the water go?, how quick would the hammock dry?
I Already had a BAD A$$ all weather bag, literally... the GI Modular set up, the one with the Gortex cover.
Fish Net Hammock. Hmmmmmmmm...
After putting both bags (the ECW and the Modular) in the net hammock just to see, the bottom is looking promising.
Look how the bottom unsulation is not completely compressed as it is in the other hammocks we use.
It is supposed to get just down to freezing tonight, so I am gonna let the GF wing it alone again tonight......
No pads, no extra blacket, just the bag, and standard camp clothes
I'll post up in the morning......

It didn't get as cold as I was hoping,, 47 degrees, But still a good hang out.
The bag worked very good on the net hammock. I really think the quilting appearence on the bottom of the bag through the net made a huge difference.
I have an old cast net that I am going to cut up and make a sleeping bag pocket on the end to help better secure the bag to the hammock on the foot end.
I honestly think that with a tarp, this set up will be fine for our traditional Texas weather. I have already used this bag below freezing, so with a few extra layers of fleece on the bottom, I know it will be fine to go colder.
This is a really narrow hammock but not any shoulder squeeze, my sholders were above the edges, ELBOWS, that was a bit narrow, but not bad.
Rolling over( side sleeping) has to be done carefully, ya can roll right out.
Last night:
No pads, I didn't use the fleece blanket on the bottom inside, just the bag , the hammock,
2 pairs of socks,
regular work pants.
t-shirt, L/S work shirt
jacket and a cap for the aggresive forehead.
PS Ref Tempature. my thermometer read 36*
the weather site had 47*
and
The news reported 34*
so I posted the highest temp.

Interesting results. Thanks for posting!
That hammock looks really uncomfortable.
I had a big gathered end net hammock that came from U.S.Cav, I think. I gave it away, because that was back in the dark ages, when I didn't know about suspensions, sag, stretch, etc. Maybe I can get it back...

I've got an ICW bag enroute. It has been enroute since the 11th.
I've gone from hoping it arrives to hoping it's still in North America. Someone slap me if I ever sign on for USPS Parcel Post again.

Yeah, Parcel Post is a bad idea. It can take weeks to deliver.
OT I know...
And I in no way intend to defend the PO. I would if they could survive on postage rates alone...
99.9% of my orders ship First Class Parcel. Nothing lost yet and they are making it in a few days. The only issue I have had yet was 1 order that went to Windsor, Ontario. And that was held at customs, I assume.
