Just got up from a Friday night backyard hang that saw a low of 23F, which is a record for me. I was toasty warm, no exaggeration. Very pleased with the DIY UQ. It's the full length kit from RSBTR made with apex 5.0.

I used my converted sleeping bag top quilt and supplemented with a poncho liner roughly tied as a sock type around the lower portion of the hammock, say waist down.

It helped that there was no wind and no chance of rain, so I went topless to see the stars. Base layer was just long johns, t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt and good socks. What really helped was my new balaclava, much superior to a stocking cap.

The negative about this system is weight and bulk. Poncho liners are relatively heavy and so is the converted sleeping bag. Future plans may include a proper sock to replace the poncho liner and a real top quilt to replace the self made conversion, but for now the price of the current equipment makes me feel good.

The DIY under quilt exceeds expectations. I was hoping for 30 when I made it. It's capable of mid-20s under calm conditions.
    "...the height of hammock snobbery!"

Great job Sidney! I bet you're pretty psyched, using a piece of gear you made yourself like that. I know I would be!

I am heading out tonight to Wildcat Creek just outside of Jasper.

Lows in the 20s. Pretty cold for this Georgia boy.

I am both a little nervous and excited. It should be interesting.

I know those yankees laugh at us when we talk about these kinds of temps being cold lol. But for us southerners-by-birth, if it gets below 50 it's chilly and near freezing is down-right cold!

It's pretty funny, before I started down this road of hammocks and quilts and the like I NEVER would have considered going out in temps below freezing, but now I'm wanting colder and colder temps to see how low I can go!

Let us know how your trip went Carl!

Yea but we can laugh at them when they say their summers are hot

I did my hang last night and I consider it a success.
This is the lowest I've gone down too:

All I had on was my base layer fleece lined compression long pants, fleece lined compression long sleeve shirt, lose fitting fleece socks, a buff and my black rock gear hardonS beanie. Didn't sleep well but I never do when sleeping in my backyard. Got a little cool close to the early morning hours but if I had slept well I probably wouldn't have notice. I had my UQ set for a Dutch hammock and was using my dream hammock dangerbird so not sure if I need to re-adjust it for the dangerbird because it is wider and has pull outs. So wondering if this is the reason I was cool on the backside using a 20° + 1oz HG incubator. I don't think I would go much lower than this without adding some more layers. I'm kinda a cold sleeper, will load the hammock up later and check the gaps later today.

Over all I think it was a successful test

    Backyard Hang in Marietta GA

I wasn't able to test my cold weather gear...as it won't be here until Wednesday, but I did stay up until 1:00 putting lights on the house...that's gotta count for something.

I have spent several nights in the back yard. Testing gear and longing for the view or winter woods.
