Lightbulb You're Doing Underquilts All Wrong. Get A Clew ;-)

Greetings. I'm sharing a new underquilt design i recently prototyped. It's a game changer for me.

Instead of hanging the quilt with a shock cord loop, it suspends via elastic hammock "clews". This changes the quilt dynamics with the following benefits:

    • 100% snug up against you, everywhere, all the time. Absolutely no gaps or air pockets.
    • Takes the same shape your hammock does, so no squeeze.
    • Hangs the same way every time.
    • Lighter design.
    • Works with any hammock.
    • You can retrofit any existing underquilt with clews.

The full writeup with pictures and instructions can be found here:

This design was inspired by my Brazilian hammock and assisted by Derek Hansen's WWII navy hammock tutorial at The Ultimate Hang.

If you try this design or any variant thereof, please post your experience with it.

    Thanks.

    Thumbs up

Well done! The ingenuity displayed on this forum never ceases to amaze. I just finished a Costco UQ and I will definitely be adding a lev mod. I will be on this like white on rice, the lev mod project has just zoomed to the top of my post holiday to-do list. Thank you very much for the post and the article!

    It's a nice idea.
Interesting to see how the little gaps affect things, a fat draft collar should fix any gaps I guess.
I think you are being a bit optimistic with the phrase "less cordage, less weight". I would be a bit concerned by the extra weight of the shockcord nettles, would be lighter to use fabric (a la Warbonnet Wookie).

    .
If the cord points are aligned with the lengthwise stitching, don't you think the pleats are fairly irrelevant?
The loft in the tubes themselves should block any chill infiltration.

Or a stretchy fabric a la snug fit?

Been wondering what that fabric was exactly on the snug fit lately

And not to poop all over your concept, but it seems to me that it would be a bit difficult to get the lengths right all the way across the board on the shock cord. I realize it stretches and would be somewhat self adjusting, but would seem to me that even tension would be most effective. And if, overall, the suspension lines were even just a little too long, there would be no way to adjust it. If everything is started and set up and created properly this seems like a winning idea, but the lack of adjustability leads me to believe that if things aren't made just right, it's not going to be as efficient, at best, and a gapped, frozen mess at worst.

It's definitely an interesting concept. I know it worked in old Navy hammocks for weight distribution. I'm curious to see how well it executes. AS others have stated, those gaps on each end are a possible weak point though. I would think you'd still need some way to snug up the ends...and that may negate the multiple suspension lines. Plus...descender rings...carabiners...extra lines. Sounds heavy.

Great ingenuity. Let us know how it does outside!
