I completed the UQ today. Orange inner, and red outer shells with 6 oz climashield. I added cord locks along the side channels which have an opening at the midpoint so that the primary suspension can be tightened if desired. I already desired! I also added linelocs for a secondary suspension at the ends, but haven't put the shock cord in yet. Now I need to do a matching top quilt. Or maybe I need to introduce another earth tone, like coyote brown???

I sewed with the CS down, and didn't have many problems. Turning it right side out was a bit more difficult than I expected. Sewing up the gap was more difficult yet, but sewing on the grosgrain holding the linelocs was the most difficult part of the whole project. I almost gave up on that. I tried to figure out how to sew them on over the CS portion, but that was a no go. I ended up sewing them to the side channels.
Here are some pics of the finished product.

Well done, friend. As much as I happen to be a fan of Coyote Brown, I think your current color scheme looks both rustic and cheery, so I vote for a straight matching color scheme in your top quilt. Good luck on that one as well.

I almost forgot the obligatory weighing shot! Here it is in an REI stuff sack I had.

    IMG_0773.jpg

I weighed the sack separately at 2.6 oz, so the total was 26.1 oz. I had calculated the expected weight at 21.6, so I missed the mark by about 4.5. Dunno if the thread, shock cord, and hardware weighed that much, but a little over 1.5 lbs sounds pretty good to me. I was surprised it stuffed that compactly, but it was a bit of a wrestling match. Way better than my 25+ year old North Face polarguard bag.

Hopefully I can get out and test it in the next couple of weeks. Current temperature here is 8F, so not tonight! I think the 6 oz CS is rated at an optimistic 15F. This is based the following:

    T = 84 - (14 * 0.82 * 6) = 15.1F where T is in deg F, 0.82 is the CLO for CS, and 6 is the oz/yd^2. I'll be happy if it gets me 25 to 30F! I sleep on the cold side.

Thank you, kitsap! As I was sewing with red side up and the puffy white CS sticking out below, I couldn't help thinking the Santa Claus was coming to town. :-)

Thank you Pdub, jellyfish and CharlieS!

Charlie - how is the new hardware in the foot doing?

P-Dub - A month ago I had never used a sew er, thread injector before. As I approach retirement age, I've gotten interested in developing more crafty skills after years of designing electronics hardware and software. I started making knives a couple of years ago, and sheaths to go with, and alcohol stoves, and other bush craft related stuff. Now it's thread injecting. Its neither as hard nor as easy as I had expected. The process is pretty straightforward, but there are a lot of details to keep in mind simultaneously. Also, the boring prep work like cutting and pinning etc, is way more important than I wold have thought.

jellyfish - I'm glad you liked my humor. I like the new bling in your avatar!

Mathineer, so your name is math+engineer?

Cutting things out is the worst. Also I dislike trimming threads.

I am the kind of person who dislikes a lot of noise, but I love the sound a sewing machine makes. It never gets old.

I think it is really funny how sewing machines are called thread injectors here. That cracks me up to no end.

mathineer sounds better than engimatician. (MS in EE plus all of the coursework in math - mostly analysis)

I actually did a google search on "thread injectors" thinking it might be some sort of specialized equipment made to manufacture hammocks and quilts.

As for the color choice, I wrestled with "blend in with nature" vs. "not look like a deer". In the end discretion won out over valor.
