    Bug bivvy (the Frankenbivvy)

Finished my bug bivvy (well, almost). This thing has so many patches and workarounds that I nicknamed it the "Frankenbivvy". I still have a few minor things to correct, but it's basically finished. Some pictures are in my gallery.

Tested new hammock, new straps, new CC buckles, new bug bivvy. Had to adjust at midnight due to straps stretching, (that and the power in our house coming back on after an outage turned on all the outdoor lighting).

Back in the shop today, I noticed a tear in the support. I replaced it with a silnylon patch. Pictures here.

Looks good. As long as it works, that's all that matters.

From the patch, it looks like you support was stressing the hole. Try keeping the sack at the end and not pulled out.

Not sure I follow. The hole was stressed due to the bivvy being just big enough, but not allowing for stretch. When the stretch occurred, the netting got way too much weight on it. I replaced the whole kit and caboodle with a (larger) silnylon end, mostly to try something that Blackbishop had mentioned to me once. That will allow for some (small) storage, and will keep windblown rain off/out, plus it will take some pressure off the netting.

It may be different, but I noticed this on mine and my bivy. If the end holes are too far down, away from the rings, there is a large enough gap from the hammock suspension rope to the ridgeline that it stresses the seams in the bag. Basically the gap is bigger than the hole.

I fix this by keeping the bag pulled toward the rings. I am thinking about tieing a line from the bivy to the rings to keep it from sliding away.

Yes, now I see what you mean. I was wondering how you solved that. I was trying to anchor it just to the support line using velcro (oh, ahem I mean hook-and-loop), but you can see how well that worked. I like your idea better.

I will get an opportunity very soon to start on the next version, since this one will be a birthday present to my brother-in-law.

Ain't no bugs getting through that thing. Looks great Patrick. You sewing skills are growing buy leaps and bounds. How much does it weigh?

    Thanks!

Hmm... I don't have a scale, so I really don't know. How do you get the post office to weigh things for you? Just haul everything in there, weigh it, and leave?

Pretty much. They usually have a scale setting out somewhere. If not just ask someone who works there to weigh it, but don't bring every piece of gear you won if you are doing that.

You can pick up a scale off of Ebay for less than $20 and they work just fine.

Most shipping stores have small digital scales for around $25 if the postal people run you off.

I can see why you wouldn't want to bring your whole pack in to weigh each individual thing. I'll have to check Ebay for a scale (and a food dehydrator.)
