I feel like these are basic skills/tricks that everyone should know but I just hadn't had anyone tell me about (or read about) them before.

So, the hems came out about 85℅ good. Some parts didn't get rolled, but that was when I didn't feed the fabric quite right. Honestly, it is hard to see where it didn't get rolled, so I am not too worried about it. My newly acquired soldering gun cut and sealed really nice edges, and so they aren't going to ravel on me anyway.

This helped quite a bit. Thanks. My hems are more than a bit large just now. I will be getting a narrow rolled hem foot. I also watched your winter tap videos. Again I learned a lot.

    Thanks

My sister has the "distinctive" rolled hem foot and I sewed some with it today. It is a little trickier to get the roll of fabric "scooched" into the foot, but the hem is lovely. I think this is slightly narrower than my HV foot.

How to sew a rolled hem with a *rolled hem foot* on outdoor fabrics

Also, you can use the following with the grosgrain which does the same as the bias binding foot. They come in different sizes to handle different widths of grosgrain.

Just some advice, these are not the best attachments you want for binding. They're better suited for solid things you're trying to bind that you can push into the grosgrain fold since you cannot feed the fabric straight into the full fold (hard to tell, but the fold of the grosgrain is actually inset from the fabric guide). Said differently, you'll only capture the very edge of your hammock fabric unless you feed it in on a curve, which is a pain.

Instead, the right angle binding attachments work *much* better for tarps and such, because you can fit the edge the fabric fully into the fold of the grosgrain. The downside is they can be a little tricker to feed properly, but once dialed in they work great. They look like this:

I have a video I'll post soon showing how I use these on tarps.

Edit: The one you posted may be okay, hard to tell but seems similar to the one Randy @ Dreamhammocks use.

I have two similar ones pictured below that have the issue I describe; note how the tape folder on each curves towards the fabric. It's difficult to tell which you may receive is the reason I'm mentioning this.

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

I just posted a new thread about a different way to make rolled hems, using swing arm guides. Not to take anything away from the presser foot hem attachments and all of the great information in this thread, I just do it differently and thought sharing may be useful. Here's the link.

I made you some more specific instructions for getting the roll started, like one would roll a *cigarette*....hahaha.

    I hope this helps.

I want to thank you again for the video. I got around to practicing today and it went fairly well, but still get careless and let it get away from me sometimes. Watched the video again to see how you hold the material with your right hand. I started watching the edges in the foot today and I see how you push and pull to keep the width correct with the right hand.
    Very well done.

It sounds like you are making good progress. There is no need to look at the needle, because there are too many other things to watch when doing this. Good luck!!!
