    J-Bend vs Beckett Hitch

Continuing to play with the Beckett Hitch for connecting Kevlar straps to continuous loops or dog bones.

The Beckett Hitch seems to be without flaw... At least as far as I can tell. It's easy to tie and untie. Holds Amsteel to Amsteel, or Amsteel to Kevlar. Super quick.

The J-Bend seems to be born of the Marlin Spike Hitch, with a Beckett Hitch to finish it.

So tell me why I would want to use the more complicated J-Bend? What are the advantages to the J-Bend relative to the simplicity of the Beckett Hitch?

The J-Bend is known to be easier to release since there is actually no tension in the hitch. This isn't a problem with Muletape but I've seen some people complain about having a hard time with Polyester or Kevlar straps. I would imagine a more obtuse hang angle and a larger person would cause this to be more of an issue as well.

The J Bend is clever so I give kudos to the guy who came up with it. I haven't had any problems with the Becket Hitch so I've found no reason to learn the J Bend.

I agree also. I know the BH, it works well, and I've never had any problems tying or untying it. Thus I haven't had the proper motivation to learn the J bend.

That said, HYOH and all, if someone prefers the J Bend and it works for them, that's great as well.

As a big guy who uses polyester straps... I much prefer the J Bend knot. After my butt gets out of the hammock it can be a pain to undo a Becket Hutch, even with mule tape. But the J Bend is super way to release even after extended lay time.

I also find that in my case the J Bend causes less wear on the straps.

I have become smitten with the Beckett Hitch. Held in -12º. Easy to pull out. Mule tape.
Using it on one end of hammock.
I am still loyal to whoopies and cannot just turn my back and walk away from them.
