    Unhappy wind(scary

so i just tried to set up in my backyard for an impromptu hang in the cold. i wanted to see what my set ups limits are.(bb dl1.7,winter yeti, half inch landau foam foot pad, bdd 4 seasons tarp, 20 degree ems down bag as top quilt, down jacket and coldgear long johns.) forecast is for 16 degrees with -3 wind chill with 20 mph winds(50mph gusts).it didnt seem so bad as i went outside. i was in the middle of putting up my bb when a huge gust hit the hammock broadside, and the hammock became like a parachute and pulled me of my feet into a pile of compost. needless to say i decided to chicken out. just wanted to vent my frustration. anyone else have any good "windy hammock stories".

The cold & wind, & especially the two of them together, can shake a person's confidence. That's a challenging way to start out w/ some new gear. Makes it even harder when the warm house is just steps away
    But you'll get it down.

I've dealt with some wind, but never enough to actually knock me around by blowing the hammock. That's some serious gusting!

    Ditto

I also had thought about setting up outside tonight, but with 55mph gusts and -5 windchill also, I thought better of it. There'll be other nights.

That's when you need the tarp set up like a Whelan Lean-To, strung tight block the wind. Do that first, then hang the hammock.

Yes, I've done same. But it was when I was putting up my large tarp in my backyard and the wind turned it into a parasail. Got frustrated from the cold and wind and just went back inside. Happened more than once and wasn't near as cold as what you describe. Now I pack my tarp in snakeskins to help keep it under control when setting up in wind.

Yep the wind, it wasn't gusting last night but blowing just enough to mess with me.
I hung my GT UL on the rack, then spread out my sleeping bag.

I walked back inside to get my cell phone and the wind had blown my sleeping bag out on the ground. If it was wet and muddy I would have been mad, but it was dry, I just had to brush off the grass and put it back in the hammock.

Early in my hanging career I was winter camping in some fairly sandy soil. The wind was gusting pretty hard and it was also getting ready to rain. I went to bed and listened to my tarp get tossed around. A couple hours later a stake gave out and I awoke to the sound of my Maccat flapping around hard in the wind. Fortunately it wasn't raining at that particular time or it could have been bad news for me. And luckily I had a spare stake with me because I had no idea where my stake had slingshot off to (JRB STL's tend to do that). I staked the tarp back down and then piled several rocks on every stake to make sure they stayed put. After that incident I replaced my UL titanium stakes with some MSR Groundhogs and always place rocks on my stake locations as insurance. I've never had a similar issue since then.

I also use snakeskins to store my tarp in. They make it a lot easier to set up in the wind. In warmer months I'll just hang my tarp skinned and only stake it down later if I need it.

For the record, I'm having a difficult (another careful word choice) time not making a risque joke.

The wind is no fun, especially when your hanging options are limited; like a backyard. It's not as bad in the field because I can almost always find someplace at least partially sheltered. Mac's right, set your tarp first (won't be easy), then set your hammock. I've never been thrown (that would take a mighty wind), but I've been beaten about the head and neck by more than one attached stake.
    Trust nobody!
