    Hateful night at 7 degrees

Did two nights of car camping with friends in the woods of Milford, PA. First night started in the upper 20's then dipped to 19 with high winds. Did just fine in HH Explorer (inside a Guide Gear 12x12 hung as a doored tarp tent), JRB Winter Nest under quilt and Mountain Hardwear Lamina 20 mummy bag used as a top quilt. Being at the bag's limit I wore acrylic socks, fleece pants, Patagonia zip neck base layer and Northface fleece shirt.

The second night it dropped to 12 after sunset hitting a low of 7 overnight with relentless wind gusting 20-40mph. My setup was a KAQ between the Winter Nest and Hammock. A cheap Quest 0 deg mummy. I felt a cold spot under my butt right away but it took a while before I removed the KAQ. From that point on my underside was fine with just the Winter Nest. Big problem was the Quest mummy. It was too short and ultimately not warm enough. Eventually put my Mountain Hardwear bag over it as a top quilt. That fixed much of the cold problem but was extremely uncomfortable all night. Even in a properly fitted long mummy with the right temp rating I just don't think the mummy in a hammock is for me. It's far too difficult to reach out and check the UQ, roll over, etc. Time to start top quilt shopping.

Interesting that with the KAQ used with the Winter Nest you were colder. Did the KAQ cause an air gap?

    kaq

you will get cold spots if you have it pulled to tight to the bottom of your hammock crushing the air space needed to hold heat . what i did and just my two cent worth. i get in my hammock with all the stuff i take on a regular hike and have a friend ajust my kaq to were it just hits the bottom of my hammock .then i have marks made with a sharpie on the cord that i go back to that works most of the time . hope this helps .

I hung both the KAQ and Winter Nest from the same UQ suspension bungees. I think the extra load caused the UQ's to hang too low in the center creating an air gap.

Biggest problem of the night was the standard sized mummy for my tall body.

I though briefly about going out this weekend but the wind. That was a real test of you gear. I wouldn't venture outside in my yard and didn't want to subject my tarp to the high wind gust here in PA. I don't have advice, but you are a braver man then me.

I would not be surprised if a gap of some kind was the problem, caused by a suspension overload. The only other thing coming to mind is the opposite: too tight causing compression of loft. To loose from too much load on the suspension sounds more likely.

So you are shopping for a top quilt? Sounds like the Winter Nest did fine on the bottom. But, it would also make a good TQ, right? Combined with a MW4, you should be set for some serious cold. I don't know what that KAQ is good for temp wise, but it could probably be souped up by adding a space blanket. Plus, can you add clothing to a KAQ to extend the range?

A Pea Pod with a Winter Nest used as a TQ plus some items added to the bottom, just took Grizzly Adams a bit below zero.

Question for you all (?) When talking about air gaps on underquilts are you referencing gaps around the edges which would let out heat and let in cold air. Or a you talking about gaps between hammock and UQ insulation. If I recall correctly, Mr. Prez had listed issues with insultex between hammock and a down UQ. Said it did better with down UQ beneath him and used insultex under his legs. Curious about performance issues as will eventually be making a winter encloser for hammock and am sitting back taking in any information available on HF or otherwise available. Thanks, Newzy

At Mt Rogers (& similar cold hangs) I use the KAQ Patomic as a secondary quilt between my No Sniv & me. They are both hung from different suspensions. I found that a snug elastic cord early evening can, even with as light a quilt as the Patomic by itself, sag enough to allow a 3" gap. My first time with the KAQ (a few years ago) was nearly a disaster: I set it up ONE time at home, then used it a few months later on a cold weather hang (around 28ish) At first I was warm, but the cords stretched & I had not practiced enough to be able to adjust them in the dark, then my headlamp failed.
I managed to mostly fix it by feel & add my sit pad to get me thru the night, but I learned my lesson and now use shorter elastic cords* AND can adjust all of my gear blindfolded.

*shorter lessens the ability to stretch, IMHO.

Not too brave. this was car camping, so if things got too hairy there was an escape.

This trip was part of an annual thing I do with some guys but this is my first year doing it in a hammock. Had just sewed center attachment points to my GG tarp and they held fine.

Now back to quilts...Do UQ's perform as well as dedicated TQ's?
