    Can whoopie slings freeze up?

As I was laying in my hammock last night (22 degree low temp, yeah baby! ) enjoying our first real snow, the cold air and stars, I started to wonder. . . Can whoopie slings get wet, freeze up, and not adjust?

It was the first night I spent in my Blackbird since switching to slings and ya know the mind just starts going . . . I'll blame it on hammock comfort.

I don't believe Amsteel will absorb any water.

Although the fiber itself doesnt absorb water, Id wager a guess that water can get between the fibers.

Not sure how much could actually get in while its under tension...

But anything is possible. I doubt it would freeze solid...nothing a few whacks against a tree wouldnt free up.

Neither does my car, but that froze solid shut yesterday.

Anything can freeze. Buckles to webbing or knots..just hold it in your hands for a second or two to thaw it out. Try to keep your stuff dry.

I remember a winter trip were everything on the outside got really wet (backpack, etc), hiking in freezing rain.
That night, all water froze of course. Next morning I had to slap & beat the ice out of the webbing straps on my backpack, (being careful not to be to hard on the plastic, Fastex buckles) just to get the pack open. Seams like there were other ropes, etc that didn't want to cooperate because they were frozen.
Like was said above, even if the material itself doesn't absorb water, water can find it's way into the weave & freeze. So good question!
It'll be interesting to see how the whoopie grips/adjusts in those worse case situations.

It sure got wet when I did the backyard "sprinkler test" on my new tarp. I'd guess it would freeze up pretty easily, but would also probably thaw out pretty easily, too.

I'm wondering now how well it would "grip" if it was soaked then froze.

Yes, I was also wondering about that aspect too. I thought if it were already hanging under tension it would freeze tight. But if it was frozen and you banged it to make it adjust, would it be too slippy to hang with. Might be time to dunk them in water and let them freeze and find out what's what.

Now that indeed would be the critical question I'd think! If it don't grip ... not so good an outcome!

Soak some whoopies and freeze them, lets see what happens. Better to find out now.
