Best Trails in Big Sur CA?

Hey everyone, I'll be heading out to cali for a conference, the second week of Feb and hope to drive down to Big Sur from San Fran on Thursday Feb 16th. Looking for a loop trail that I could knock out in Two days, One night and head back up to San Fran on Friday for dinner.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Forecast looks like 50s-60s during the day and 30s-40s at night. Bringing 20 quilts from hammock gear and my WB Superfly with doors.

I have yet to hike and camp Big Sur, however, you might want to look into Point Reyes National Seashore, I just checked and Sky Camp has openings for sites number 5 and 6 both are in the trees and are the only places I know that can accomodate Hammocks at Point Reyes and only an hour north of SF.

There was a huge wild fire in Big Sur last year that burned for about 4 months.

Most of the National Forest in that area is still closed, and will probably remain closed for months. (state parks too, everything east of highway 1 is closed).

For hammocks I would recommend Forest of Nisene Marks - nice walk through redwood forest and good views of Monterey.
It is not dispersed camping but they have a trail camp with a few good trees.

If you got there bring plenty of water - there is no water source near camp.

Also within driving distance is Castle Rock State Park, and Big Basin Redwoods State Park. It's beautiful around there. I should know, since my Scout Troop camped there dozens of times.

Big Basin has the Huckleberry Falls trail, with a separate return trail whose name escapes me. Beautiful in both cases. IIRC there is a campground along the way. I don't know the rules on dispersed camping.

Good thing about Castle Rock is that you can just turn up no booking required.

Big Basin is pretty but they want to to reserve a site - even for backpacking. Weekdays in winter should be no problem though - see here for details.

You cannot hang in the redwoods- Big Basin explicitly prohibits hammocks. Always check park rules.

There is a nice hike to Salmon Creek. Waterfalls and all sorts of nice scenery with great vistas of the ocean. There are multiple trails so you should be able to find one that is agreeable to your wants. It's been 3 years since we went but there were no restrictions at the time. That said, Lori's words are golden.
Happy Trails to one and all.
Enjoy the outdoors wisely and elevate your perspective.

Would love to hear about what trail you settled on and how it goes. Looking for quick excursions in this area too.
