    Advice about pads needed

I have a friend who wants to try hammock backpacking, and I have all the gear needed to lend except for bottom insulation. This is for a gathered-end, single-layer hammock. (I know that, for a pad, a double-layer would be better, but this is just a short-term try out.) A lot of pads that I see online are just 20" wide. Is that wide enough in a hammock? And, if a wider pad is needed, where is a good place to buy one?

    Thanks!

I use the klymit static v insulated, its a little over 20"s. They have a klymit static v luxe that is longer and wider @ 30"s. I have had mine down to around 14 degrees with snugpak underquilt. Hope this helps and happy hanging.

GossamerGear has pad 40 wide by 70 long and 3/16 thick-I think. Better to get larger pad and only trim it down some if it's too large. That way there's no hangover the edge of pad and cold.

Thanks, folks, for the information, and special thanks to Shug for the video! Gossamer Gear seems to be out of stock on their hammock pad for now, unfortunately, but maybe the REI Stratus or the Klymit pad will do it.

I wouldn't drop too much cash on a pad as a secondary. The 3/4 synthetic underquilts like the AHE Jarbidge, are about as much as the expensive pads at $100.

I would get a couple cheap blue CCF pads for $10 each and make a pad with wings or go for the underquilt, but not go for the expensive pads, unless you have certain features that you prefer about the pads or need them for other reasons.

1/4" Closed Cell Foam pads can be purchased in 36"-48" wide rolls. I recently chopped mine up to make footbox and sit pads or I'd give you some.

That's a good point, thanks, but the Stratus pad we can return to REI if hammmock hanging doesn't appeal.

The problem I had with a pad was, I'm a side sleeper. When I would roll to my side, my shoulder would be off the pad...and got cold. I tried making one with wings. It worked, but I dont like carrying stuff on the outside of my pack. Bit the bullet with a uq.
