I live right next to bull run power plant (less than 2 miles to Haw Ridge). If you mean the little peninsula next to the bridge forget it. The trees aren't hang friendly and it is *covered* in garbage from years of uncaring idiots.
I don't think they allow overnight at the haw ridge part but could be wrong?

I mean the old ropes course, which is TVA Undeveloped Recreation property and is in pretty good shape with good hanging trees. Just off the paved Haw Ridge trail.

Welcome from Nashville here in middle Tennessee. Used to live in Oak Ridge over in east Tennessee, right out of college and BC (Before Children). Those were mine and my wife's "caving" days. Now it's backpacking and kayak camping.

I backpack every month of the year and often in east Tennessee. Last June alone I spent three weekends in the GSMNP, but that was getting ready for an AT hike in Maine.

    Welcome to HF!

What about one of the backcountry spots closer to Maryville? Past Abrams Creek Campground a mile in there is 1 which holds 14 people. There are some nice ones back in there that are 3 to 4 miles in.

Might be worth a shot. I love frozen Head (Petros) as its close, free, hammock friendly and has hot showers if needed. That said I'm plenty open, especially for kayak camping like Panther Creek

Just went to Frozen Head this weekend. It was a nice hike/hang.

Frozen Head appears to be the crowd favorite.

If there is interest, we could consider a group hike from Cove Lake to Frozen Head, with a night or two of handing at Frozen Head afterwards to include those who didn't participate in the hike.
