CONVERT your TARP into a SOCK. (dual use)

I am sure some of you have already fiddled with this...

    How? (suggested rough design)
-Add snaps along the bottom edges of the tarp, every 1.5-2 feet.
-Add a cinch cord on the sides, (with channels).
-(optional) add small "rain caps" over the suspension exits, to rain seal them.

    How To Use?
-drape the tarp over the HAMMOCK RL.
-using the snaps, snap together the 2 bottom edges, below the hammock, to create a sleeve, 360 around the hammock. (if its too narrow, you can snap a tear shape extension in the middle bottom, or, you can drape the tarp over a secondary, sagged lower, RL)
-use the cinch cords to cinch the sides around the suspensions.
-(optional) install the rain caps over, to seal around the suspension exits.

    When?
    -when its cold and dry.
-when there is only dew, or chance for light rain.(you can keep the sleeve covering only your lower half, , and slide it full, if it start to drizzle)
-when there is very strong wind. (danger of tarp ripping, while in tarp pitched mod)

    Thoughts
I am sure there are reasons why i did not see it done.
please help me figure the pros and cons, and find design solutions to the cons, before i take on the project. (i need to make a tarp, anyway)

    -Bless your hanging hearts-

This can help in severe wind and cold--but most of the time the antidote is worse than the poison. I think there will be problems with condensation. It couldn't hurt too much to try and you will be none the worse save a little claustrophobia and condensation either wet or ice crystals on hammock and insulation. It's only through pioneering innovators that we get our new ideas. I say do it!

This design could have it's place. Another tool in your tool belt for sure.

Pro- Can use less material for tarp=less weight.
Con- Less material means less room to see your surroundings(like a tent).

Pro- Less room for wind to rob warmth.
Con- Possible to rub the tarp getting in and out and will wet you from the condensation.

For me, I like lifting my tarp high and in porch mode with nice weather to drizzle. And the ability to lower and close up with rough weather. My doors already allow me to close up nicely without having the tarp rub against me.

Make one to see how it works and make adjustments as necessary.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

    Thank you friend.

I am already experimenting 2 years with different sock layers, and i love it !!! (no claustro..).
i have 2 breathable thin material layers, plus mylar layer - amazing for wind, and weighs nothing.

yes, at times there is condensation on the mylar, but a second, inner layer keeps it out.
i was thinking there will be vent from the bottom of the tarp, between the snaps.(if i do not pull it full and cinch the sides, there is no problem).
the idea came when my tarp almost got ripped, few days ago, and i got soaked with side rain.

i also love the open view (my current tarp is transparent and i love it!!).
    my current sock has windows.
also i dont pull it closed if it is not cold, so i have 360 view.
so this way, if no real rain expected, , i can see the stars, without a tarp to block it, and if it will start raining a bit, i will pull the tarp/sock above my head, which is enough protection for light rain.
So, this way i am somewhat protected, without the need to pitch a tarp mod.

It is suggested as having one more (simple to execute) option, in certain situations (as mentioned), as per user preference. (be it raging wind, causing side rain, only dew, etc).

    plus...NO EXTRA GEAR...!!!
just a mod on your current gear.
so i am seeking advice, how to add the best mod, without compromising the tarp strength and performance.

would you put the snaps into the tarp edge..? ...add it on an extra flap?...use Velcro instead...?
    reinforce the snap strip?... ETC..

Yes either snaps or extra guy line loops
Some find Velcro to attract leaf litter etc

    Thank you friend.

    here is another thought -
if you have a row of snaps along the bottom edges of the tarp,
you can have a, say, +8 inch wide, extension strip, to snap it on the wind side, draping
like a curtain, ( with. or without, tying weights, to stretch it down).
This will block some wind and rain, extending the tarp coverage.
this same strip can extend the tarp width (if its less than 10 feet wide), so the bottom edges can meet underneath the hammock)
(as i mentioned, the other option to have the edges meet, in a narrow middle, tarp, is to drape the tarp from a secondary, RL , tied with a sag, below the structural RL.)
