Well, it looks like Watauga Dam Rd is just about 35 miles from Damascus. Then another easy access point would be Tn 91 at mile 439 (Damascus is mile 461). If shelters are a big deal to everyone then Watauga is a pretty sweet start point; shelter every 7-11 miles. If we leave from TN91 and want to camp near shelters, we'll have an odd distance day to stay at shelters.

Both starts will get us at least one climb that should make a non-thru breathe a little harder, but nothing really difficult. I remember this being a pretty gravy stretch of trail, but that was after putting 400 miles on my boots.
    Trust nobody!

I like this option. Looks like a good idea to me. I'm down with it if the majority of those who are going to hike are as well. I've been wanting to do that section anyway.

Hooch - sounds perfect. I'm not a fast hiker and I like to keep the miles down.

I hiked that section over New Years weekend last year SOBO it was a steep drop to Watauga Dam Rd. but it wasn't very long. Of course I was getting off there so that always makes it seem shorter. Once you get to the top of the ridge its pretty easy terrain to Damascus. It was 39+ miles just to the TH, I'd say a mile or so to the town.

For me, starting to hike on Tuesday, 11 May would work out best. I'm not sure about others, but hopefully, that will work for them as well.

I hiked Erwin to Trail Days last year and had a wonderful time. I might be interested if you decide to go SB. Either way, I hope to meet some of you at Trail Days.
