Is there a material that's more skin friendly than nylon that could be used for the bottom side of a quilt?
- or is the weight/durability penalty not worth it?

People make hammocks out of silk, so why not quilts? I'm not sure what weave would be down-proof.
Yes!
Thru Hiker has a material called "Momentum 90" (Mom90 for short). It is a really nice fabric against the skin, but a bit pricey. I made Genuine Draft a winter quilt using it for both sides of the shell. It's a hair lighter, but not enough to matter IMO. Next quilt I make I'll use it for the inner shell only and plain old ripstop for the outer shell. It really does feel nice and soft against the skin.
Trust nobody!
Sorry, I should have been more specific.
If you want it on the inside shell, you'll want to use the taffeta weave of the Mom90; no ripstop grid.
Trust nobody!
I have a Super Stretch Burrow Bag #2 Long http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=31&p_id=1121768[/URL]. Not only is it a great, roomy bag, but the inner lining is so soft I croon when I get in it. It is other-worldly. If you can find out maybe by emailing them what it is you will NEVER get out of your hammock. The outer layer is different than the inner layer.
Cheers

I've been stewing on that vest kit for a while now. Let me know how it turns out for you. Might just be the straw that breaks my back and puts me back in front of the thread injector.
Trust nobody!
Mountain Hardwear's Lamina 20 bag is made with an incredibly soft and nice to touch fabric. Maybe it's Momentum, I don't know. Nicer than any fabric I've come in contact with.

I dunno, plain old ripstop non-DWR feels okay once I'm in it. I did have reservations just handling it, but it does fine.
That said, I think I'd get the Momentum if I made another quilt. It's nice stuff.
