I made mine out of Tulle. You can get it at any fabric store for less than $2.00/yrd. for the 72" wide version. Takes about 20 minutes to sew one up.
Finished it is about 3-4oz including the shock cord.
We don't have noseeums around here and tulle keeps all the mosquitoes and other bugs out just fine. I have used mine for about 3 yrs no problem. If it tears just make another one.

I camp in the tropical jungles. Mosquitoes are the least of my worries. You never know what the night flying fauna has in store for you, from noseeums to mosquitoes, spiders, assassin bugs to vampire bats, etc. The odds are high that you'll get a night visitor unless you're shielded by a net. And occasionally, when the permethrin has washed off, I've found katydids eating away the mesh fabric. All of that to say that I cannot afford to hang netless.

To promote ventilation I pitch the tarp a bit high above the hammock, and carry a handheld fan that I hang from the ridgeline. I take a bath just before going to sleep to feel clean and refreshed, I get in the hammock, turn the fan on and point it toward my chest. It cools me off in a matter of minutes, and I sleep quite comfortably the rest of the night.

I have a bug net I picked up at a Boy Scout camp years ago that has a hexagonal (honeycomb) pattern. The holes are a little bigger than the noseeum I purchased from RBTR, but it kept the bugs out just fine. I can't say if it allowed better airflow, because I only used it while sleeping on a cot in a heavy canvas tent!
